Presidio Golf Course and Clubhouse

Why We Like This Place

Since 1776, the year Lieutenant Colonel Juan Bautista de Anza was dispatched to establish a garrison to protect the harbor of St. Francis, the Presidio has guarded the narrow mouth of San Francisco Bay, first for Spain, then Mexico, and finally for the United States. Then, as now, the Presidio was one big beautiful piece of California real estate. Today, its 1,500 acres of eucalyptus, cypress, pine forest, coastal wild flowers, and ocean and bay views belong not to the army, but to the National Park Service, and the 7,000-square-foot Clubhouse just inside the old Arguello Gate is a fine place to host a wide spectrum of events.

Set on a rise at the end of a stately drive, the Clubhouse has a casually refined look that makes you want to step inside. The interior, a blend of Mission-style architecture and Maybeck-inspired, landscape-friendly details, features cathedral ceilings, exposed fir beams, cherrywood trim and paneling, and a large limestone fireplace. Five French doors extend its largest dining area, the Presidio Cafe, onto a spacious wood-trellised patio with an excellent view of the final green of the Presidio’s historic 18-hole golf course. President Theodore Roosevelt reviewed the command on the Presidio Golf Links in 1903, and many a golfer of note—including TR himself, Dwight Eisenhower, Bing Crosby and Arnold Palmer—has played through on its fairways. The patio, with its verdigris tables and chairs, is perfect for any style of function from barbecue to black-tie.

Of course, the close proximity of Bentgrass greens and well-maintained parklands is a powerful lure. Party plans could easily include a bit of golf practice or a short, ranger-led walk. But more likely, guests will simply want to sit back and enjoy the fresh air and the vista—lush green lawns, pine and eucalyptus groves, the blue-roofed towers of distant USF, and the comely neighborhood mansions, all looking very low-rise from this vantage point on a gentle crest.

If those wide open vistas are a tad too distracting, the Palmer Room (named for Arnold Palmer, of course!), provides cozier quarters just right for smaller meetings, breakfasts, luncheons or dinners, and the Palmer Terrace and lawn with its garden setting and pine-curtained bay views allows celebrants once again to take the dining and good times outdoors.
