Description
For years this graceful Spanish-style chapel has been an inspirational place for couples—those with military connections, that is—to say their vows. With the Presidio’s transfer to the National Park System, however, it’s now available to the public as an interfaith chapel. Built in 1931 on the crest of a wooded hill, it stands sentry over a glorious panorama that extends from the Golden Gate Bridge to the San Francisco skyline. Architecturally, the chapel is a descendent of the old California mission churches with its tiled roof, three-story bell tower, and textured stucco exterior. Long considered sacred ground, the site was revered by the Ohlone Indians before the Spanish established the Presidio in 1776.
In fair weather, gather for pre-ceremony socializing in the memorial garden, a flower-lined tiled patio that overlooks the Presidio grounds and the Bay. Views of Angel and Alcatraz Islands are framed by sweeping branches of pine and eucalyptus. Here guests await the peal of the church bell summoning them to the sanctuary for the ceremony. Inside the chapel, a soaring redwood-beamed ceiling hung with wrought-iron chandeliers, twelve arched stained-glass windows, and heavy oak doors all contribute to a strong "old world" flavor. The Chaplain’s office serves as a comfortable private dressing area, and there’s even a pipe organ for that traditional rendition of "Here Comes The Bride."
Adjacent to the sanctuary, the mural room feels like a long, glass-enclosed sun porch. It overlooks the garden and hillside, but its most notable feature is the mural from which it derives its name. Painted by the same artist who created the famed Coit Tower murals, it depicts St. Francis at its center—a fitting picture considering the variety of wildlife that lives around the chapel and the fact that St. Francis is the patron saint of animals. The room makes a tranquil spot for an intimate reception or post-wedding mingling while the bride and groom have their photos taken in the picturesque memorial garden.
The chapel is now in the care of the Interfaith Center at the Presidio, a nonprofit organization dedicated to inter-religious friendship. The passing of the chapel into public hands as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area is being celebrated not only by the Bay Area’s diverse religious community, but by everyone who appreciates the sanctity and beauty of this historic spot
