Why We Like This Place
Even when it was a U.S Post Office back in 1937, the building that houses Postino Restaurant had exceptional charm: a picturesque cottage exterior, brick walls and a slate roof—all of which have been carefully preserved. The interior, however, has been completely transformed into a warm, rustic, and sometimes whimsical environment, evocative of an Italian country inn.
Postino’s setting is storybook perfection. A tidy hedge dotted with white flowers shelters Postino from the street. Its ivy-covered brick façade rises to a pointed, double-layered turret with an iron pennant jutting out at a permanent, jaunty flutter. The sharp top of the gray slate roof gives way to a gentle outward curve as it slopes down over the terrace along the building’s left side. A small black gate in the hedge swings open to welcome visitors up the walk, along the lush lawn (just right for photos), and past the neat border garden with a gently trailing birch tree.
Inside, the delicious aromas of meats and vegetables roasting al forno will pull you straight from the front door into the Atrium, the main dining area. The entire back of the room is open to the kitchen; a high rustic wood counter separates chefs from diners, and serves as a buffet for private events. Tables and chairs can be removed altogether to free up space for dancers to take a spin on the slate floor. The Atrium is open and full of light; the sun’s rays spill through a glass-paned ceiling and a diaphanous canopy of parachute silks, illuminating the frescoes of Tuscan countryside scenes that decorate the brick walls.
Peek into some of the smaller, more contained dining areas that open off of the Atrium. There’s the Family Room on the right, with its giant wood-framed fireplace and cockleshell lanterns floating overhead. Adjacent to the Family Room is the Alcove, a semi-private space just right for a gathering of intimates. The Tavallozza, in the left wing, features a single long country-style table; the atmospherically subdued Library, also on the left, houses the Capo table, a massive oval nearly enclosed by a soft banquette.
At the far end of the left wing, past the 30-foot copper bar, is Postino’s completely private dining room, the Buca. Here, the brick walls have been whitewashed and decorated with painted olive-leaf vines. Mullioned doors on the left side open directly onto the terrace, where white canvas umbrellas shade guests sipping cocktails before a reception. The Buca’s ceiling rises to a sharp point accentuated by unpainted wood beams. With furniture removed, the effect of the room is chapel-like, making the Buca as well suited for a small wedding ceremony as it is for a private dinner.
Special-event diners enjoy the same dishes the restaurant prepares for its regular patrons. Postino has garnered several “Best Restaurant” awards from Diablo Magazine and the Eastbay Express, so we know you’ll be in for a culinary treat. You can experience the diverse regions of Italy by sampling their main courses, such as Calabrian Spada Agrodolce, a swordfish scallopini with Central Valley smoked almonds, golden raisins and rosemary; Tuscan-style braised short ribs with soft Scamorza polenta; Sicilian breaded veal cutlet with roasted red pepper orzo and basil-toasted garlic brown butter. Fresh mozzarella and pastas, such as garganelli or “hemp pasta,” are made daily.
For a rehearsal or corporate dinner, a well-heeled bachelor/bachelorette party, or an afternoon wedding with a distinctly Italian flavor, Postino is the place. Event options here are plentiful, and atmosphere is unlimited. Buona fortuna!
