Description
As part of the Ports O’ Call Marketplace, a New England-style enclave of shops, restaurants and attractions right on the water, this restaurant of the same name is one of the most surprising venues we’ve come across. We were expecting a standard eatery, but instead found a wide variety of appealing event spaces, almost all with terrific harbor views.
The lush entrance to the restaurant is so inviting, you just want to park yourself on the bench out front in the garden and take it all in: A brick path, lined with palms, trees, ferns and all manner of colorful flowers, crosses over a small pond filled with potted plants and bordered by a riot of red and hot pink impatiens. At the shady end of the pond a rock waterfall creates a soothing background sound.
Once inside, you have six ceremony and reception options to choose from. Our favorite one, which is used only for ceremonies, is the spacious open-air patio that extends out over the water. Enclosed by a low brick wall planter, it affords diners an unobstructed view of the harbor as well as the boats moored right next door. A light mesh canopy screens guests from the sun, and heat lamps provide warmth during cool evenings. Sitting here you can hear the lapping of the water, feel the gentle breeze and watch the port traffic glide by.
Two banquet rooms upstairs also caught our fancy. The Bridgeview looks out onto the patio and has a clear sightline to the Vincent Thomas Bridge, which is lit up at night along with the rest of the port. Two walls are glass, and the other two are mirrored, resulting in a pleasing wraparound view. The Breakwater Room faces the opposite direction, with a calming vista of the water leading out to sea and the marina right below. Both rooms have built-in parquet dance floors, coffered ceilings, and abundant warm wood trim.
An additional trio of banquet rooms is available on the ground floor. The Harbor View, just above the patio, accommodates smaller groups and has views of the port through two walls of windows. For larger affairs, the Catalina Ballroom features elaborate crystal chandeliers, a deep, coffered ceiling and a central dance floor. If you’re planning a rehearsal dinner or very intimate event, then reserve the Captain’s Quarters.
Ports O’ Call’s newest offerings aren’t even in the restaurant. Take a short walk along the brick path through the quaint village buildings, and you come to an expansive waterfront wooden deck where ceremonies are held. Overlooking the restaurant to the left and the water straight ahead, it’s a fresh, sunny spot to exchange vows. Just a few steps away is a chapel for indoor weddings, and next to it is charming space for a small hors d’oeuvre reception or champagne and cake for up to 40 guests.
Other fun possibilities include arriving at the public dock by boat, getting married on a yacht, or reserving a Spirit Cruise vessel for a cruise around the harbor. There’s no doubt about it: at the Ports O’ Call Restaurant you can create a multifaceted and truly memorable experience.
