Pine Creek Gardens

Description

This is a wonderfully different and private place. Only ten minutes from the leafy campus of California State University at San Bernardino, it’s a world apart. You can feel yourself decompressing right away, as you drive the lightly traveled road that runs up to it through some of Southern California’s best base-of-the-mountains scenery. When you reach 2,600 feet, surrounded by an arid landscape of shrubs and bushes, you suddenly see the towering pines, maples, birches, sycamores and walnut trees of Pine Creek Gardens, a swath of intense and refreshing green amid the high desert’s browns.

As you walk around Pine Creek, lawns, flowers, small pools and fountains accentuate its greenery and give the impression of a cool, well-watered retreat. The property has several different levels, connected by stairways with comfortably wide risers and superbly crafted wood banisters. Little lawns and benches seem to pop up everywhere, like petite roadside rest stops for pedestrians. Along the path that leads to the wedding ceremony area, a vista opens to the populous lowlands below, reminding you just how much you have left the workaday world behind.

Weddings most often take place in the evenings when a reliable cool breeze descends from the mountains. As you make your way to the ceremony area, you have the sense of taking a short, meaningful journey to a sacred place. A white arbor, set against the backdrop of a starkly beautiful high mountain ridge, marks its outer boundary. The path through it leads to a small bridge flanked by a koi pond and a fern-adorned waterfall. Once over the bridge and past some birch-tree sentinels, you arrive at the ceremonial space, where semi-circular rows of seats are shaded by a vine-clad trellis. The seats face a gazebo that has been built part way into a hill, sheltered by pines and an ancient walnut tree. (To reach the gazebo, you cross a bridge that spans a small pool, home to fish we think are probably the biggest, fattest koi in all of San Bernardino County.) The view from the gazebo is memorable——luxuriant flowers and trees, a dramatically sloping desert mountainside, distant cities, and the happy faces of loved ones and guests.

The well-thought-out reception/dining area is a two-level terrace shaded by an overhead balcony. The upper level has a gift table, DJ stand, head table and buffet area, plus dance space. The lower level features a large table seating area and a bougainvillea-covered latticework bar, all protected from the sun by mature pines. Because Pine Creek has no neighbors, cranking up celebratory music is no problem. Other touches are nice, too: the wicker-furnished bride’s room has six mirrored makeup stations, and there’s also a groom’s room.

If you’re familiar with tales from ancient times, the gardens here may bring to mind a celebrated old story. It’s the one about a young queen in an arid country who misses the cool green place of her birth and prevails upon her loving husband to build her a reminder of her homeland. He carries out her wishes, and they call his creation the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Pine Creek may not be as wondrous as Babylon, but it offers all the beauty and serenity you could want.
