Description
At the west end of Oxnard lies Channel Islands Harbor, "the Gateway to the Channel Islands"—an uninhabited archipelago eleven miles offshore. Though well known to boating enthusiasts, the gentle coastal inlet has escaped the commercialization and over-popularity that has plagued its more famous seaside cousins to the north and south. Visitors enjoy easy strolls along the tranquil boardwalk, admiring the sailboat masts in graceful lines against a calm horizon. Summertime art festivals, prestigious yacht races, and pristine, uncrowded beaches (with free parking!) are just a few of the area’s attractions. This laid-back, waterfront niche is also a "lifesaver" for brides with a modest budget but caviar tastes, still reeling from sticker shock after venue-shopping in Malibu, Newport Beach or Santa Barbara. Many breathe a sigh of relief when they tour Pacific Corinthian Yacht Club, an upscale, private facility where non-members are invited to celebrate special occasions.
If you’re attracted by the romance of boating and marina life, this place is definitely for you. However, bridal couples whose only boating experience is Disneyland’s jungle cruise will feel perfectly comfortable here, too.
The sand-toned clubhouse with red-tile roof has a clean contemporary style that is mirrored inside. A vaulted lobby is warmed by polished oak paneling, and visitors are introduced to the club’s signature decorative element: a neat row of small flags that forms a jaunty, multi-colored "cornice" around the ceiling. These flags represent sister yacht clubs all over the world that share high standards and an elite status amongst the nautical set.
In the club’s Main Dining Room a curved wall of narrow floor-to-ceiling windows overlooks a pool patio and the marina, creating the feeling of being inside the ballroom of a luxury ocean liner. A sea-palette of deep green carpet and sky-blue ceiling is brightened by tiny lights around the perimeter and support columns. Since the weather is usually mild most of the year, couples often host intimate ceremonies and receptions out on the patio. The accommodating staff can even set up a fountain in the middle of the swimming pool, and there’s a private dock so the bride can make an aquatic entrance!
A second-story private dining room called the Crow’s Nest is a wonderfully novel space for rehearsal dinners or cozy receptions. A trio of pale blue stained-glass windows depicts local wildlife, and if the doors are left open to the adjoining tiled terrace, everyone will savor the tangy sea air. The spacious terrace wraps around its own service bar, making the cocktail hour both easy and scenic. Looking out over palm fronds, guests have a bird’s-eye view of the marina, including intrepid kayakers, gorgeous yachts and gulls surfing the updrafts. Sunsets here are glorious, and at night the harbor lights and a starry panorama enhance the romantic mood.
Pacific Corinthian also has a gourmet chef on site, and whether you opt for a multi-course menu, food stations or hearty themed buffets, he’s happy to work with your tastes and budget. With so much to offer, this sophisticated harborside venue is a fabulous find.
