Orinda Country Club

Description

In the early 1920s, Orinda pioneer E.I. deLaveaga had a grand idea: to build a luxurious subdivision, centered around a country club that would provide its residents with "…family recreation, wholesome, happy country life…and something for every member of the family to do—golf, swimming, tennis, dancing…" He hired the finest architects, engineers and landscapers, and in 1925 the Orinda Country Club first opened its doors, bringing deLaveaga’s joyful vision to life. Now, almost a century later, this spectacular club continues to offer its members and guests a host of recreational and social activities, all in a setting of unparalled natural beauty.

Designed by noted San Francisco architect Hamilton Murdock, the Orinda Country Club is a classic example of the the Spanish Mediterranean style that reached its pinnacle in the 1920s and 30s. Design elements such as a red tile roof, balconies, archways, and a textured stucco exterior create a building that is in complete harmony with its woodland environment. Though it has been renovated many times since its opening, the Clubhouse still evokes the glamour of those bygone days. You wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Katherine Hepburn strolling off the tennis court or Clark Gable teeing up on the golf course (and that isn’t just a fantasy—Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Joe DiMaggio and Jack Benny are among the celebrities that have played golf here).

The Clubhouse’s interior reflects the handsome Spanish influence of its exterior. The main event space is the Grand Ballroom, which lives up to its name in every way. Upon entering, your eye travels upwards, past ornate metal chandeliers to the arched balcony supported by spiral columns, finally taking in the coffered ceiling and elaborately painted molding edged with copper. Large mirrors reflect the soft gold of the walls and the shining hardwood floors, and plush area rugs add touches of color. Fireplaces at both ends of the room can be lit in cool weather, heightening the room’s warm, sumptuous ambiance.

Arched French doors lead from the Ballroom to the Terrace Room. Here, one wall of windows opens onto fabulous views of the golf course and surrounding hillsides, so thickly covered in oaks, bays and alders that it must look much the same as when E.I. deLaveaga first set eyes on the property. A balcony runs the length of the Terrace, perfect for contemplating the wooded vistas surrounding you. Large parties can use the Terrace and the Grand Ballroom. There’s even a "semi-private" room just off the Terrace that’s popular with anyone looking for a place to relax and enjoy the festivities without feeling overwhelmed.

As befits such an exclusive, upscale establishment, the service here is "above par." The expert staff can assist you in every detail of your event, from choosing linen colors to selecting wines that will complement your customized menu. Everything is included in the price: bartenders, servers, insurance, and an on-site coordinator. And since only one event is scheduled per day, you and your guests can relax and savor every moment you spend at this unique facility. When you book your event at the Orinda Country Club, you’re not just a customer, but a "member in spirit," participating in a tradition of gracious hospitality that’s sure to continue for another hundred years.
