Ondine

Description

Looking out Ondine’s windows, the panorama of Richardson Bay and San Francisco’s fabled skyline is so drop-dead gorgeous that famous celebrities like Robert Redford, Audrey Hepburn, Clint Eastwood and Marilyn Monroe all dined here just to gaze at the view. That was when Ondine was a destination restaurant. Today, it’s a destination special event place, and an ideal setting for a sophisticated wedding.

A short stroll from Ondine’s pier-top parking takes you along a covered passageway and then up a flight of stairs to a unique private dining space, featuring curving walls, zigzagging wood inlays and undulating wrought-iron handrails. Playful geometric shapes pop up everywhere in sconces, moldings and upholstery. The floor alternates wide and narrow planks of knotted and pitted rough-hewn pine, while latticework sculptures of dark wood arc across the ceiling.

When you enter the space through its reception/bar area, more details catch your eye: the warm, faux-finish design on the walls and an abundance of fine-grained wood surfaces and cherrywood-colored moldings. The bar, cut into a curving wall, adds to Ondine’s chic aura by shining indirect lights on glittering bottles and glasses. Leading down to the dining room is a ramp, skirted by a slender wrought-iron railing that curves along the walls before diving to the floor in a final flamboyant curlicue. The dining room has a sophisticated feel, with its high ceilings, creamy off-white and rust color scheme, and plush carpet. And the beauty of the room is perfectly complemented by panoramic views of San Francisco and the bay.

Although Ondine’s view and décor have starring roles, the menu gets top billing. Ondine has its own private kitchen and staff, which means no "hot boxes" with pre-made entrées waiting (and waiting and waiting) for the right moment to be passed out to guests. Private parties here enjoy a fine dining experience: everyone is served at the table with freshly prepared dishes. When you book your event at Ondine, you won’t be sharing the space with other people—it’s yours for the night. Exclusive use of the facility always includes having a special event staff member on site to make sure every little thing is expertly handled.

Ondine’s clients are often surprised that a venue with such a fine vista and good looks can offer such competitive pricing. In fact, one major Marin County figure (he’ll remain nameless, but think about galaxies long ago and far away) has used Ondine for several wrap parties, pleased with the site’s location, amenities and cost.

Marinites might be tempted to keep Ondine to themselves, but they’re doomed to fail. This place makes too good an impression. Whether people drive here over the Golden Gate Bridge or come from the north along Sausalito’s waterfront, they’re invariably going to arrive in a good mood from all the great scenery. And once they experience the smart setting and terrific cuisine, they’re going to want to tell everyone they know.
