Ole Hanson Beach Club

Description

San Clemente, along the Pacific Coast Highway, is the quintessential Southern California beach town. The vibe is relaxed, the dress code favors tank tops and flip-flops, and when surf’s up you grab your board.

Just off the fabled highway is a wedding venue that perfectly embodies this laid-back ethos. The Ole Hanson Beach Club, a city-owned events center and swimming pool, is located in San Clemente’s picturesque downtown, so close to the sand and surf that you could practically toss a bouquet and hit the beach. Built in the 1920s as a private clubhouse by city founder Ole Hanson, this two-story venue is romantic yet unpretentious, and steeped in history. Hollywood’s original Tarzan, Johnny Weissmuller, and surf legend Duke Kahanamoku competed in the Olympic-sized swimming pool here for berths on the 1928 U.S. Olympic swim team.

In front of the clubhouse is a lush lawn with a big, shady coral tree that has become a favorite spot for ceremonies. As you exchange vows you can hear the gentle crash of waves, taste the salt air, and catch the distant squeals of children at play—it’s like getting married at the beach only you don’t have to shake the sand from their shoes afterward. If you schedule your ceremony on either side of sunset, you can dash over to the beach for a quick photo session against an orange-hued horizon.

The clubhouse is classic Spanish Colonial Revival, with a red-tile roof, white-washed exterior and rooftop verandas. After the ceremony, guests climb the staircase to the second floor to continue the festivities. The main room is spacious and airy, with oceanview windows, a beamed ceiling and wood floor. A door on the west side opens to a large rooftop veranda that overlooks an ocean dotted with surfers waiting for the next swell. This is the most popular area for dining, as there’s plenty of space for tables and the backdrop is heart-stopping. You and your guests can lean against the waist-high perimeter wall and gaze off at the endless expanse of sea, the swaying palms and gently soaring seabirds. After dinner, invite everyone back inside the main room for music and dancing.

The city provides tables, chairs, screens and a PA system, but most everything else, from decorations to music, is BYO. Cost-conscious couples might opt for a potluck supper, punch and cake, with music supplied by an iPod and portable speakers. Those with bigger budgets could host an expensive catered affair with French bubbly and a string quartet. And whether you’re a bride in a simple summer dress and a groom in board shorts, or a couple attired in Vera Wang and Ralph Lauren, you’ll feel equally at home here.

The Ole Hanson Beach Club is the kind of setting that will linger in your guests’ minds long after the celebration is over. While you and your betrothed will be the stars of the show, you can count on this venue to ably play a memorable supporting role.
