Why We Like This Place

If #2 on the list of "The Top Ten Reasons Why Oakland’s Chinatown is Better Than San Francisco’s" is "Because you can actually find street parking," then #1 has got to be "The Oakland Asian Cultural Center." This vibrant nonprofit organization has been building cultural bridges in the community since 1985, offering an exciting range of quality artistic presentations showcasing the heritage of Asians and Pacific Islanders. Since the unveiling of their attractive user-friendly event facilities in 1996, the Center has become a hit with corporate planners and savvy brides from a wide diversity of backgrounds.

OACC, as it is known, is on the second level of Pacific Renaissance Plaza, in the heart of Oakland’s Chinatown. The hub of this bustling neighborhood, the Plaza welcomes locals and visitors alike with its sleek architecture and spacious tiled courtyard. The first two mezzanine-style floors of shops and offices form a semi-circle around the Plaza, while 14 self-contained stories behind it house condominiums. In the middle of the Plaza, an abstract sculpture fountain provides a tranquil counterpoint to the energetic rhythms of the city. To reach the OACC, take the escalator or elevator to the second floor, where open glass doors invite you into the Center.

The Lobby’s minimalist décor makes careful use of the OACC’s signature colors: black, red and gold. A large red-striped emblem is emblazoned on black carpeting, and a bronze sign bears the Center’s name in red and black letters. Brides will find the Lobby an excellent place for the guest book and gift table, perhaps enlivened with a striking floral centerpiece.

If you’re hosting your cocktail hour at the Center, then guests proceed down a pair of corridors that make up the Exhibit Halls & Gallery, slowing down to admire a variety of Asian art work on display. They’ll quickly arrive at Conference Rooms 4 and 5, which combine into one ample, blue-carpeted salon. With two skylights and crisp white walls, the space is bright and inviting, especially when you’ve set up a bar and hors d’oeuvres stations. (And while everyone is happily dipping their dim sum, the bridal party sneaks off for photos by the sculpture fountain!)

The highlight of OACC, however, is the Edward Chin Auditorium. Accessed through mahogany-trimmed glass doors in the Lobby, this immaculate venue with gleaming hardwood floors has an understated elegance suitable for any theme or occasion. Creamy-white walls inset with navy blue fabric-finished panels are accented with white pillars and contemporary light sconces. Lofty, 16-foot cathedral ceilings have low curving moldings that soften the clean modern lines of the space. At the head of the room stands a full stage with a rich mahogany apron and a beveled proscenium arch, perfect for a band, DJ, or a decorated head-table. The stage also makes a dynamic dais for your ceremony, with friends and loved ones looking on from below. Then while guests sip champagne in the Conference Rooms, the staff sets up for your reception in the Auditorium, equipped with state-of-the-art sound and lights.

Events at OACC reflect the diversity of Oakland itself, including Chinese, Mariachi and West African weddings, as well as an Argentinean Tango party. The large, fully equipped professional kitchen even has giant woks for preparing authentic Asian cuisine. You’ll appreciate conveniences like backstage dressing rooms and plentiful underground parking, and you can also reserve the Dance Studio for a kids-only area. Adaptable, classy and relevant, the Oakland Asian Cultural Center brings a smart polish to any celebration.

EVENT/RECEPTION & MEETING CAPACITY: The OACC holds up to 220 seated or 325 standing guests.

Fees & Deposits

50% of the rental fee is required to reserve your date. The balance is due 30 days prior to the event. Rental fees range $1,100–1,650 per 4–8 hour block. A full commercial kitchen and additional rooms are available for a separate, additional fee. Nonprofit 501c3 rates available.
