Why We Like This Place
The sun is setting over the vineyards, burnishing acres of grapevines that race past your dining car window as the Napa Valley Wine Train rolls through the heart of the Wine Country. You and your new spouse want a little alone time, so you make your way to the end of the train and step out onto the quaint viewing platform of the last car. Standing in the waning daylight, you hold hands and smile at each other, caressed by the warm breeze and hypnotized by the gilded ribbon of tracks that seem to stretch out behind you forever. It's a magical moment, one you will remember for years to come. And it's a moment you can't get anywhere but the Napa Valley Wine Train. The train's history goes all the way back to 1864, when the rail line was built by San Francisco's first millionaire, Samuel Brannan, to transport visitors to his spa resort in Calistoga. After changing hands several times, it was finally purchased in 1987 by a group of citizens who founded the Napa Valley Wine Train. They proceeded to restore eight vintage 1910-era Pullman rail cars as well as a 1952 Vista Dome car, and establish a luxury rail dining experience.
When you have your reception in one of these turn-of-the-century cars, you feel as though you're traveling on the Orient Express: rich, mahogany paneling; brass accents; etched-glass partitions; and velveteen-covered armchairs transport you to another, more refined era. Sunlight slanting through windows washes over flowers, glassware and silverware, making them all sparkle against crisp white linens. Your multi-course gourmet meal (cooked fresh onboard using seasonal, environmentally responsible ingredients) is served at a leisurely pace, letting you savor each dish along with the wine you've chosen. As night falls, antique wall sconces cast a warm glow over everyone. The three-hour round trip leaves plenty of time for your family and friends to eat, drink and be merry, as well as explore this remarkable train.
The Napa Valley Wine Train offers a variety of packages that can accommodate almost any budget. If you're looking for an affordable option, host a simple train-free ceremony and/or reception at the Wine Train Culinary Arts Center overlooking the Napa River. If what you have in mind is a pull-out-all-the-stops affair, then have a garden ceremony at a nearby winery followed by a catered reception on the train, and cap off the evening with dancing in the Wine Train Station, decorated any way you like. To make your event even more memorable, consider adding a truly original twist by incorporating a murder mystery or having special "characters" mingle with your guests, filling them in on interesting or amusing details about your nearest and dearest! Planning to elope or renew your vows? They have packages for you, too. Wedding coordinator extraordinaire Diane Schwitalla takes an extremely flexible approach to wedding planning, and can help you put together an event that will suit you perfectly.
Celebrating your wedding, anniversary, birthday or even a cozy dinner for two on the Napa Valley Wine train may be unconventional, but it's also incredibly satisfying. This unique restaurant on wheels not only takes you on a journey to the past, it also delivers fine cuisine, romance and the beauty of Napa Valley all at the same time.
