Description

The Marin Art & Garden Center, an eleven-acre historic estate in the exclusive town of Ross, is a dream come true for anyone seeking exquisitely landscaped gardens and a serene, private atmosphere. Recently the Center has experienced a renaissance, with the addition of yet more gardens, courtyards, patios, fountains and a gazebo. Within these lush, tree-shaded grounds are various indoor and outdoor sites available for weddings, parties, meetings, workshops and other special events.

The newly renovated Livermore Pavilion is a wonderful venue for large events. Spacious and airy, it offers an uninterrupted view of the gardens through a wall of windows. Rustic stone gas-jet fireplaces add warmth both inside the room and on the adjoining deck, which is shaded by an attractive awning. The Pavilion is air-conditioned and can be divided into two intimate spaces, making it ideal for corporate meetings. Two AV screens are available on request.

The inviting Garden Room opens out to an expansive garden area. When the weather is warm, you won’t be able to resist having your event outside. The garden is enclosed by ivy-covered walls, live oaks, redwoods and Japanese maples. Below these trees huge mossy boulders, heavenly bamboo and flourishing shrubs heighten the woodsy atmosphere. A lava rock fountain whispers to itself in one corner; a Japanese stone lantern sits serenely in another. Tables with white umbrellas provide seating in the sun-dappled center of the space. Buffet service or a string quartet can be set up on a slightly raised area, shaded by redwoods. Evening events are made magical by discreet lighting, the bubbling fountain, and hurricane lamps placed on tables and hung on poles throughout the garden.

The room itself is elegant, yet relaxed. French doors and generous skylights bring in plenty of light, and connect you visually to the garden. Faux-finished walls, painted in a montage of Impressionist-style colors, extend the garden feeling. Other tasteful features include a fireplace and glass wall sconces twined with metal grapevines. The room opens to a diminutive brick-walled flower garden containing a patio, rose and camellia bushes, and a seashell fountain. Though most couples exchange vows elsewhere on the Center grounds, intimate weddings can be accommodated here, too.

For couples getting married at the Center, the woodsy grounds offer a host of attractive ceremony sites. The Fountain area is perfect for an outdoor ceremony, reception or party. Here, a large
fountain pool, containing lifelike bronze cranes, sends its glittering spray into the air. A floral rainbow of daylilies, blue catnip, verbena, Santa Barbara daisies and iris blooms around the fountain, all enclosed by an aggregate-concrete path. On one side, a forest of mature elms, Lombardy poplars, deodar cedars and honey locusts forms a backdrop behind a curving wooden bench beneath a pergola. To the left, couples tie the knot in the Memory Garden, a shady glade decorated with garden ornaments. Other spots for ceremonies include the Magnolia Tree Lawn and the Gazebo Lawn, a large swath of velvety grass graced by a rare dawn redwood, elm and horse chestnut trees.

Though its fabulous gardens and tranquil atmosphere make the Marin Art & Garden Center seem a world away, it’s centrally located near Highway 101, and only twenty minutes from San Francisco. When you have your event here you not only have a chance to "get away from it all," you also experience a little piece of Paradise close to home.
