Why We Like This Place
Before Mandarin Oriental, San Francisco opened in 1987, a Feng Shui master was flown over from Hong Kong to make sure that the arrangement of the hotel’s spaces and furnishings would promote optimum harmony. His input only enhanced what the hotel’s designers had set out to create: a soothing and sophisticated environment where guests lack for nothing. We’re no Feng Shui experts, but we think they succeeded admirably. Borrowing elements from other celebrated Mandarin Oriental hotels from Hong Kong and Thailand to London, this one manages to be both modern and luxurious.
A nearly life-sized gilded statue of Guan Yin, the Chinese Goddess of Mercy, bestows her beneficence on you as you pass through the polished black-and-white marble lobby and up the stairs to the main event spaces. Unlike most hotel banquet rooms, each of them has its own distinctive ambiance—no boring, windowless boxes here.
For a spectacular ceremony, get married on the outdoor Sky Deck on the 40th floor of the hotel. At this height you’re presented with a postcard panorama normally only enjoyed by birds: unobstructed views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Coit Tower and Alcatraz Island. You may also tie the knot in the Library, where brass-trimmed bookshelves, a salmon-colored ceiling with gold leaf insets, and crystal chandeliers add warmth and sparkle. Afterwards, you can serve cocktails in the tailored black-and-cream Foyer outside the Library, or go directly into the Embassy Room for your reception. The room’s décor reflects a decidedly French influence: Large hand-painted panels are inset in three fabric-covered walls and framed by beveled glass borders; faux-candle chandeliers and wall sconces provide soft lighting. Windows along the second wall let in natural light. Nearby, the triangle-shaped Boardroom can be used for private dining as well. A pale yellow color scheme, recessed lighting and a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows keep the space pleasantly light and airy.
Silks, Mandarin’s award-winning restaurant, can also be all yours or, if your event (perhaps a rehearsal dinner or post-wedding brunch) is more intimate, hold it in The Gallery, Silks’ private dining room. Both spaces have been recently updated: the main dining room in a sumptuous blend of rich fabrics and warm colors like saffron, plum, pomegranate and cream; The Gallery in more buttery hues.
Although we don’t usually devote much space to guestroom descriptions, Mandarin Oriental’s are so captivating that if we were going to have an event here, we’d want to include an overnight stay or two. The guestrooms occupy the top eleven floors of this 48-story building (the third tallest in San Francisco), and offer expansive vistas of the bay, both bridges, Alcatraz Island, Marin, the East Bay and the city itself. In fact, two of the suites have terraces large enough to accommodate a small event on their own. You’ll appreciate the elegant appointments and windows that actually open to let in fresh air, but it’s the bathrooms that give these rooms extra cachet. Each one is done in gorgeous marble, and 22 of them feature a huge picture window next to the bathtub so that you can savor the panorama while you soak. Sample their menu of bath treatments for a sublime tub experience: Before walking down the aisle, relax in a tranquil, Zen tea bath; after the wedding, celebrate with champagne and strawberries in a soap rose-petal bath.
Although it has plenty of international glamour, Mandarin Oriental, San Francisco offers the personality and attentive service of a boutique hotel. We think it’s a wonderful choice, not only for a special event, but for a romantic getaway any time of the year. After luxuriating in one of their guestrooms for a couple of nights, you might just want to move in permanently.
