Why We Like This Place
“Fusion” is hot these days and perhaps nowhere is the merging of diverse cuisine and décor executed as well as at the fabulous new Maison Riz in Redondo Beach. It’s rare enough to find a wedding venue where the interior ambiance can hold its own against breathtaking ocean views, but when you add in one of the most innovative and sophisticated menus around, you know you’ve discovered someplace very special.Maison Riz is perched right above the water at the edge of the historic pier. Its French flair is immediately apparent, from the chateau-style exterior to the curlicue embellishments of the wrought-iron doors, which bring to mind the Art Nouveau flourishes of the famed Paris metro. The Gallic sensibility continues inside with curved, old brick walls sporting arched cutouts like a country house in Provence. Yet, above the circular marble bar at the center of the lounge is a domed fresco of Japanese rice farmers, and this perfect melding of French and Japanese influences plays out through every aspect of this casually elegant, two-tiered restaurant.
The spacious upper-level lounge area (great for after-dinner dancing) has dark, wide plank floors and marble cocktail tables surrounded by comfy leather club chairs. Tucked in the corner by the entry is a glossy black baby grand piano and to the right is a sleek, glass-enclosed wine cellar displaying a distinctive collection highlighting petite vineyards.
Beautiful as this room is, you can’t help but be captivated by the ocean panorama just beyond the dining room two steps below. Floor-to-ceiling windows extend the length of the restaurant so every seat gets an eyeful, from the gorgeous sunsets in the west to the white-capped waves hitting the shoreline to the south. When night falls, the views are enhanced with floodlights and the sound of water lapping against the sand and pier pilings makes you feel like you’re on a boat.
But what truly distinguishes Maison Riz is its glorious food. Created to be a journey of multiple courses shared with friends and family, each dish is a complex layering of flavors and textures that make every bite a wake-up call for your palate. Standouts include the Toro Ravioli, tender tuna belly gently wrapped in seaweed and daikon with a citrus-infused, garlic seaweed sauce and a touch of uni on top; the panko-crusted Crispy Chicken Salad over tender greens in a sesame soy dressing that will make you forget any other fried chicken you’ve ever eaten; the Chilean Sea Bass in a rice-cracker crust with petite vegetables that’s served so beautifully you almost hate to eat it; and of course, ultra-tender kobe beef which is featured in several incarnations. Desserts, too, incorporate the best of French and Japanese flavors, from a rich chocolate gateau to green tea tiramisu and Asian Apple Crisp, a wonton-inspired variation on tarte tatin. Each dish arrives like a work of art, and the dedicated staff is happy to custom-design your menu.
The possibilities here are irresistible: you might even want to host a pre-wedding bridal party during Happy Hour to sample the menu and imbibe exotic cocktails made with fresh ginger and lychee liqueur…or hold a convivial rehearsal dinner where courses served family-style bring everyone closer together. However you choose to celebrate at Maison Riz, it will undoubtedly be a very memorable event.
