MacArthur Park Palo Alto

Why We Like This Place

Although a popular restaurant, MacArthur Park’s biggest secret is that it’s also a great venue for special events: everything from business meetings to wedding receptions and intimate rehearsal dinners. The landmark building which houses MacArthur Park was designed in 1918 by renowned architect Julia Morgan, and originally served as a recreation facility for WWI troops. The structure’s simple yet handsome design was dictated by a rock-bottom $1,800 YWCA budget, and is a fine example of Morgan’s ability to combine craftsman style with utilitarian needs.

The main dining room has a vaulted ceiling with exposed wood trusses and beams. Details include several balconies and two large brick fireplaces situated at either end of the room. The decor is subdued: black chairs contrast with white linens; attractive framed artwork graces board and batten walls. Rooms are painted in rich, soothing café au lait colors. The very attractive private dining rooms feature the same warm tones and wall treatments as the main dining room and are well-suited for smaller rehearsal dinners and business meetings. Several sets of French windows are framed by long drapes, gathered and held back by brass knobs.

For outdoor functions, take a peek at the enclosed courtyard, an aggregate patio with white chairs and matching linen-covered tables. Striped fabric awnings shade guests from the sun, and heat lamps take the chill off during cooler months or during evening affairs.
