Why We Like This Place

Mention Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel to anyone who's recently stayed there, eaten there or attended an event there and they start to rave because, frankly, it's just that fabulous. From its coveted perch above the Pacific, this world-class luxury hotel, mere blocks from the Santa Monica Pier and lively Promenade, exudes a uniquely local ambiance. In this hip seaside town, that means unpretentious elegance with a focus on the water.

This dynamic is evident as soon as you enter the stunning lobby, a four-story, light and airy atrium lined with 40-foot palm trees and interior balconies. Decorated in breezy blues and white, the effect is like walking into an Architectural Digest spread of the quintessential beach house done on a grand scale. The reception area to the left has a soothing waterfall and straight ahead, visible through walls of glass, is a breathtaking panorama of ocean and sand. Because this is a particularly wide swath of beach with long wooden walkways, there's an ever-changing tableau of activity for you to watch and enjoy.

Loews has a veritable treasure trove of picture-perfect wedding sites, and one of the best ways to start your event is at the Pool Area, where you can exchange vows with unobstructed views of the ocean and the Pier's historic Ferris wheel visible in the distance. If you prefer an indoor ceremony, there's the Ocean Atrium, a soaring three-story space with natural light streaming in through floor-to-ceiling windows. (You can even arrange a permit with the city for a ceremony on the beach.)

One of the hotel's most popular spots is the Venice Room, a secluded and sophisticated gem that faces the ocean. This multilevel locale encompasses a covered, outdoor patio and a two-tiered indoor reception area, affording views from every angle. Guests can register on the lower level, linger over cocktails on the patio, then walk up a staircase—sheathed with rippled glass panels echoing the waves outside—to a beautiful dining room boasting coffered ceilings and white columns.

But if you have your heart set on all-out glamour, nothing beats the Arcadia Grand Ballroom on the hotel's fifth floor. Begin with cocktails in the expansive Arcadia Foyer, overlooking the lobby atrium. Then, invite your guests into the exquisite ballroom, a watercolor fantasy reminiscent of a Monet painting with walls covered in rich green and gold silk, crystal lamps topped with opalescent quartz shades and lush carpet swirled in tones of underwater blue.

While hotels are not generally singled out for their haute cuisine, Loews Santa Monica is an exception to the rule. Their gourmet, market-fresh menu is consistently lauded by critics and locals alike and can be savored in each of their private event rooms as well as their glowingly reviewed Ocean & Vine Restaurant, a great pick for a memorable dinner.
