Why We Like This Place

If novelist Dashiell Hammett were alive today, you'd surely find him here. This is, after all, San Francisco at it's finest: a historic building in the city's chic epicenter, expertly renovated with the quirky sophistication that has long distinguished this famous city by the bay.

Velvety club chairs invite lounging in a lobby that introduces guests to the hotel's relaxed residential style. The striking furnishings in bronze and willowy greens are artfully arranged before large windows that frame the vibrant Sutter Street scene. Breeze past the front desk on the left side of the lobby and into Bar 1915 where black marble-topped tables, high-backed leather chairs, brass and cherrywood accents, and photos of old San Francisco conjure the classic comforts and glamour of bygone days. From here your guests can step into the Living Room, which will make them feel right at home—if home has a black marble fireplace set with shimmering bronze and mother of pearl tiles, lustrous wood paneling, facing black and tan sofas in ultra soft fabrics, a carved antique sideboard, and other stunning architectural details.

A short walk through another stylish lounge area delivers guests to the small business center to the right of the hotel's roomy ground floor prefunction space. A huge mirror reflects the warm honey-colored walls and makes the room look even larger. A long black granite countertop stretching the entire length of the room provides ample space for even the most elaborate buffet. The hardwood floor here suggests that this might be an excellent place for dancing. It's also an ideal setting for pre-dinner cocktails and conversation. At the far end of the room is a semi-private dining area that can be used as your center of operations, a place to set up gift and favor tables, or as a cozy spot for pre- or post-function tête-à-têtes. A prep kitchen off this room stands ready for use by your caterer.

Two double doors lead from the prefunction area to the handsome Pacific Heights Room. The light, biscuit-colored walls rise to high ceilings and elegant white crown moldings that recollect the property's charming Edwardian past. Abstract oil paintings pick up on the carpet's rich copper and russet tones. Wedding reception, business meeting, literary or arts event, fundraiser—whatever the occasion, it'll seem just a little bit warmer and more intimate in this room.

For more privacy guests can take the stairs or elevator up to the mezzanine where restrooms and a comfortable sitting area offer a chance to rest and refresh. The multipurpose Nob Hill Room, on this level, can accommodate smaller groups. Anyone ready for total relaxation might want to head upstairs to one of the gracefully furnished suites and guestrooms, where calming colors, flat screen TVs and Featherborne bedding make it easy to unwind after the celebration.
