Why We Like This Place

Occupying several acres in the heart of residential Carmel, just two blocks from the beach, La Playa remains one of the loveliest and most inviting places we’ve had the pleasure to write about. Originally built in 1904 as a private residence, La Playa was converted and expanded into a hotel in 1916. Standing in front of the building, you feel a bit like you’ve been transported to Europe. The distinctly Mediterranean style, with earthy terracotta-tile roofs, soft pastel walls and a bright green formal garden are reminiscent of Italy. Even though there’s a lovely patina about La Playa, make no mistake—this is a full-service resort hotel offering a contemporary freshness as well as a romantic Old World appeal.

For outdoor celebrations the wrought-iron gazebo is the spot, set amid brick patios, a fountain, technicolor annuals, manicured lawns and climbing bougainvillea. The entire setting is lush and private. Inside are rooms of various size for private functions, with antiques, lithographs and memorabilia of early Carmel. The hotel is a refreshing destination for a personal or business retreat—here tasteful furnishings, French doors and magnificent views are standard amenities. We can’t help but love this place. And if you can’t drag yourself away, feel free to stay overnight, or have your honeymoon here, too.

CEREMONY CAPACITY: The gazebo area seats 100 guests.

EVENT/RECEPTION CAPACITY: The hotel can accommodate 12–112 seated guests.

MEETING CAPACITY: There are several rooms which hold 12–120 seated guests.

Fees & Deposits

For weddings, a $2,500 nonrefundable deposit is required to confirm your date and banquet space. Half the estimated event total is due 6 weeks prior to the function; the remaining balance is due 3 weeks prior to the event. Rental fees range $250–1,900 depending upon the space rented. Menus can be customized; reception buffets and seated meals range $34–60/person. Room rental fees, beverages, wedding cakes, tax and an 18% gratuity are additional.
