Kyoto Grand Hotel and Gardens

Why We Like This Place

For the bride who's always envisioned a tranquil garden wedding, but also wants the chic energy of a downtown hotel, Kyoto Grand Hotel and Gardens offers both. Conveniently located at the edge of Little Tokyo, near Chinatown and mere minutes from the art district's world-class museums, theaters and concert venues, this newly updated, 21-story, luxury hotel has a modern, cosmopolitan air. But it's the hotel's re-creation of an ancient treasure that truly sets it apart.

Tucked away on the third floor is a half-acre, miniature scale version of a 400-year-old, historic Tokyo garden. Replete with cascading waterfalls, pebble-lined ponds and a wooden bridge, the dual-level garden offers a variety of beautiful ceremony and reception backdrops. While you get ready in a complimentary suite, your friends and family will be whisked by private elevator to this urban anomaly, an outdoor haven that celebrates the serenity of its pastoral design while reveling in its city surroundings. Particularly appealing is the upper lawn, landscaped with bamboo stands and mature trees. Here, a Zen-like, meandering waterway contrasts cleverly with skyline views of some of L.A.'s most recognizable landmarks. To add even more drama, you can make your entrance by seeming to float across the water on a pathway of flat rocks. After the ceremony, you can head to the lower garden and terrace for cocktails, or usher your guests inside the hotel for champagne and hors d'oeuvres.

The large, L-shaped, second-story foyer is open and airy and overlooks the lobby's soaring Rendezvous Lounge, which is adorned with a kiosk of shirred silk, parasol lighting and Sumi ink murals. After cocktails, the doors are opened to the elegant Ballroom for dinner and dancing beneath a sixteen-foot ceiling, inset with a series of crystal "chandeliers" that run the length of the room. Smaller, less formal weddings or even rehearsal dinners work beautifully in any of the hotel's more intimate dining options, from the private Orchid Room to the light, bright Azalea Restaurant that boasts a domed ceiling, lower-level dance floor and views of City Hall. There's even a tree-fringed patio that connects you to the city outside while still providing privacy.

With all the dining options comes a plethora of menu choices, because the Kyoto's chefs are adept at virtually every type of cuisine, from Continental or Oriental to California-American and other ethnic specialties. In fact, the entire hotel and event staff's multicultural savoir-faire means they can—and will—accommodate almost any unique request: They've set aside a nearby room for a Korean bride's multiple costume changes; customized menus from their various kitchens to incorporate religious, ceremonial or "taste of home" foods; even tracked down a white elephant (well, they hired an elephant who, with the help of nontoxic movie makeup, appeared white for the day) to carry an Indian groom to the hotel's Grand Street entrance. If they can pull that off, you can be certain they'll help you bring your own wish list to life.
