Why We Like This Place

You might feel just a little star-struck when you step through the massive double doors of this swank North Beach restaurant located on a prestigious corner of Washington Square Park. Who wouldn't? It's plush and princely, with an alluring ambiance well suited to Hollywood and sports royalty. Designed with exactly that crowd in mind, Joe DiMaggio's Italian Chophouse is just the place for an impressive gathering. It's got a vibe as rakish and debonair as that of the well-loved "Yankee Clipper" himself.

Joe would feel right at home in the glamorous Manhattan Room and so will you and your guests. Let them greet one another and catch up over martinis and champagne in this splendid metropolitan setting while a little jazz, swing or blues strikes just the right background notes. Black leather chairs and wingback banquettes in charcoal suede team with black marble-topped tables to give the room a clubby feel. The floors are burnished Brazilian cherry, the walls a handsome taupe and the dark walnut wood accents and hammered tin inserts in the ceiling add sheen. Through the large windows that front the building you'll have an inspiring view of gorgeous Saints Peter and Paul Church where many a San Francisco notable (including our hero, Joe) has elected to tie the knot—its lacy white towers are as elaborate as any wedding cake.

The Beach Street Room, named after the San Francisco street the famous ball player grew up on, is ideal for a rehearsal dinner or any other ultra-chic private affair. It's also been dubbed Joe's family room. The rich burgundy walls are hung with classic, gallery-quality, never-before-seen black & white portraits of the famed athlete's family and friends. A luxurious drape can be closed for even more privacy.

For the ultimate in sophistication, dine in the spacious North Beach Room where the black leather tuck-and-roll banquettes and private booths recreate the elegance of a celebrity supper club. Speaking of supper, this restaurant's got what it takes to please even extra-critical foodies. A two-time winner of City Search's "Best Steakhouse" award, this place is tops for chops, fresh seafood, local/sustainably grown veggies, and flavorful treats from the wood-burning oven. Large sit-down events play well here, but don't overlook other party possibilities.

The adjacent Tony Bennett Room has audiovisual capability, vaulted ceilings, and the luxurious feel of a private screening room. A corridor lined with unpublished, exhibition quality photographs of the sports and entertainment superstars who were Joe's pals leads to the lipstick-colored Marilyn Room, named for Monroe, of course, the iconic movie star who stole the slugger's heart. A copy of their marriage license is on the wall along with candid shots of Marilyn and Joe. It's the perfect place to steal a kiss, cut a cake or deliver a dramatic announcement. And naturally there's a marvelous bar and lounge—an excellent place to begin or end your revels, whether it's the guys' or gals' night out before the main festivities, dancing and drinks on the day of, or a nostalgic toast in the happily-ever-after.
