Why We Like This Place
We arrived at Il Cielo at the end of a long sweltering day (Los Angeles was in the middle of a heat wave) and we were, to say the least, tired and cranky. However, the moment we stepped through the wrought-iron gate, we were instantly cheered by our surroundings: the verdant and serene front garden patio of a charming ivy-covered cottage with green wood-trimmed windows and a Mediterranean tile roof. Originally a private residence, this bungalow was transformed into a restaurant in the 1970s. A decade later, Pasquale Vericella, whose family hails from Sorrento, Italy, purchased it and christened it Il Cielo—the sky. Under Pasquale’s deft guidance, Il Cielo has thrived and is now famous for its marvelous Italian fare.
Having hosted some 1,800 weddings over the past 23 years, Il Cielo has also garnered a reputation as an excellent wedding and reception venue. The New York Times rated Il Cielo among the top five places in the country to get married, and such high praise is well deserved—Pasquale and his Event Director work with each couple to ensure that their wedding is seamlessly choreographed, and they encourage a sense of participation and community among family and friends.
Festivities begin on the front garden patio with a mini-feast of champagne, Bellini, mascarpone cheese, and fruit. After enjoying the appetizers, guests stroll over to the Chapel Garden for the ceremony. As they wait for the bride to make her entrance they can admire the setting, reminiscent of a European country villa: a Tuscan courtyard with an antique Italian tile floor, “aged” stone walls, and Botticelli angel fountains. A 50-foot retractable glass skylight makes outdoor weddings possible year-round.
Post ceremony, guests usually reconvene in the front garden for hors d’oeuvres, while the newlyweds slip away for a little alone time in the Main Dining Room. This artfully designed space has been transformed into a lounge area just for them—the fireplace, large bay window and cherub-filled, fresco-painted blue ceiling make for a dreamy, elegant ambiance.
In the meantime, the Chapel Garden and its adjoining dining room have been reset for the reception. From the dining room, French doors open to a spacious outdoor dining and dancing area under the stars.
Topping off the celebration, the wedding cake is served in the front garden, accompanied by toasts to the bride and groom. The cake, a Vericella family recipe, is a delectable flourless chocolate confection, layered with white chocolate mousse and fresh raspberries and wrapped in French white chocolate.
Dancing resumes in the Chapel Garden until the “walking chariot” appears, marking the end of the festivities. In this delightful Italian country wedding tradition, an accordion player and several servers carrying Venetian lanterns sing Italian songs as they escort the newlyweds “home” to their suite at the Four Seasons Hotel across the street (included in Il Cielo’s wedding package). What a charming way to conclude a thoroughly magical evening.
