Hummingbird Nest

Description

If you’re looking for a V.I.P. locale for your wedding (and who’s more V.I.P. than you on that special day?), then Hummingbird Nest, originally a crème de la crème private weekend getaway, affords a peek into the rarefied world that most of us only dream about. Completed in 2004 after years in the making, no expense was spared throughout the premises and the results are spectacular.

The tall, white unmarked gate that guards the entrance does not begin to prepare you for the sheer scope and visual beauty of this premier equestrian estate. Extending over 140 acres, Hummingbird Nest’s landscape forms a perfect transitional palette from the earth tones of the Simi Hills that surround it to the multi-hued native plants with explosions of colorful blooms that line the ranch’s curving roadways to the lush green horse pastures.

Presiding over the property at the top of a hill is the 17,000-square-foot sprawling Spanish Mission style residence-turned-clubhouse. Arched entryways, curved columns, tiled staircases and the prodigious use of fancy ironwork add grace and drama to the crisp white façade. The main circular court with its central fountain at the front of the building has such a lovely view that it’s sometimes used as a ceremony site, allowing the bride to make a dramatic entrance down the front steps of the villa.

Just to the left of the main entrance, there’s a wrought-iron gate that leads to a garden, complete with a natural stone waterfall and a Spanish tiled gazebo—another favorite ceremony backdrop. To your right, the Saltillo tiled patio extends the full length of the villa, which is possibly even prettier from the back than it is in the front. The multi-level patio with its fountains, iron lanterns, array of palms and high-end sound system (hidden inside rock formations), offers enormous flexibility for receptions, whether large-scale or more intimate. From this vantage, you can look down over the sweeping acreage to the large Grand Prix jumping field below and the immaculate barns in the distance. These areas, along with a tranquil lake nearby, offer excellent backdrops for bridal photos.

Yet, there are still more tempting options to explore on the park-like grounds. At a recent wedding, guests had cocktails on the patio then strolled along a paved pathway to a large open field that can easily accommodate 500. In keeping with the equestrian setting, the bride and groom arrived via a horse-drawn carriage.

For a very romantic setting that draws upon the history of the property there’s the secluded original 1920s ranch house, known as “Sitting Bull.” Utterly charming, the brick and adobe building is shaded by century-old eucalyptus and olive trees. It features a cobblestone courtyard (where you can add a dance floor), a sizeable garden and a sparkling pool area decorated with two ornamental carved wooden horses.

To complete the experience, extend your stay in paradise (or put up guests) at one of several fully equipped three- to four-bedroom cottages…then head off into the sunset from the estate’s own helipad!
