Description
In the dense woods of western Sonoma County near Monte Rio, you’ll find a one-lane road that climbs through laurel trees and redwoods until it reaches its destination, the mountaintop retreat of Huckleberry Springs. From this 56-acre property laced with flowerbeds and whimsical sculptures, you’ll be rewarded with views of sunny ridges and a forest primeval.
Huckleberry’s centerpiece is a two-story yellow lodge with a wide deck, flanked by a spring-fed swimming pool and towering redwoods. A stairway descends from the deck to the main ceremony area, a lawn fringed by manzanitas, oaks and redwoods. (You can also hold your ceremony at other sites on the grounds—just let Huckleberry know your desires.) After vows are exchanged, guests celebrate upstairs on the deck and in the solarium dining room, a pleasing space with a cathedral ceiling, a skylight, banks of windows, and walls lined with weathered barn timber and recycled redwood columns. It opens to the deck, creating an agreeable indoor-outdoor flow.
While you’re here, you’ll be wrapped in a cocoon of privacy. Huckleberry’s four cabins are hidden from each other, yet within a short walk of one another. All have wood-burning stoves, so if you arrive when the weather’s cool expect a fire to be already blazing when you enter your cabin. Newlyweds are partial to the three-bedroom bridal cottage, easily the most sensational of the inn’s accommodations. Its unassuming exterior opens into a full kitchen, a sun room/dining area with forest view and an adjoining deck (including a grill), a big-screen TV and a slate-faced fireplace. The flooring alternates between stone and wide-planked light pine, and there’s a cozy spa on the porch. The cabin is light and airy—a great place to kick back, fire up the barbecue and shake off any pre-ceremony jitters.
Another way to relax is to pay a visit to the private massage cottage, a secluded Japanese-style structure in the middle of a small redwood grove that’s a one-minute stroll from the main lodge. Lined with fragrant cedar and bathed in soft light from abundant windows, it’s the perfect place for letting the rest of the world fade away. More pampering can be had at the hillside spa, and an aesthetician is available to do makeup on site.
Dining at Huckleberry Springs is a highlight of any stay. The gourmet cuisine emphasizes regional ingredients such as organic greens and vegetables from nearby farms, salmon and crab from Bodega Bay and spring lamb from a local rancher.
If you feel a need to explore, there are over 120 wineries in the area, hiking or horseback riding through the magnificent redwoods at Armstrong State Redwood Park, canoeing on the serene Russian River, or walking along the Sonoma Coast state beaches. But in a romantic place like Huckleberry Springs, you may be perfectly happy just taking refuge in your peaceful and beautiful surroundings. As one guest remarked, "this is a true paradise—as close to nirvana as you can get!"
