Why We Like This Place

Walking through the doors of the Hotel Whitcomb, you leave bustling Market Street behind and enter a sophisticated boutique hotel with turn-of-the-century flair: high cathedral ceilings, polished Italian marble, and rich wood paneling.

But creating a beautiful environment is not this hotel’s only talent. While preserving and capitalizing on its historic grandeur, the Hotel Whitcomb also provides the best of modern amenities and makes its wedding packages—which include a complimentary bridal suite and coordination services—surprisingly affordable.

Thanks to its colorful history, the Hotel Whitcomb is special in both structure and aura. The hotel was still under construction during the 1906 earthquake, which devastated the City and ruined City Hall. City officials decided that the hotel would be perfect for a temporary City Hall, and after it was completed it served as San Francisco’s seat of government from 1912 to 1915. In fact, some of the old jail cells in the basement are still intact, and curious guests can arrange for a tour of them.

Nowadays, along with the grand lobby, marble pillars, Tiffany glass, and hand-carved wood that are part of its legacy, the Hotel Whitcomb also enjoys a Starbucks Café, a health club, an internet cafe, over 17,000 square feet of banquet space and all the equipment to support business meetings in the electronic age. Connecting with the internet is a breeze thanks to free high-speed wireless access in all the banquet rooms, public areas and guestrooms.

On either side of the Lobby, enormous doors take you into the main event spaces: the Whitcomb Ballroom and the Ghirardelli Room. The Ballroom is where ceremonies usually take place, but receptions are held here too. There’s a grand stairway entrance for brides, a mezzanine for photographers, one of the largest parquet dance floors in The City, and a ritzy ambiance created in part by leaded glass and gold leaf. The Ghirardelli Room, smaller, though no less elegant, is often used for rehearsal dinners and intimate receptions. If both rooms are reserved, wedding guests can flow between them and the Lobby, enjoying the flavors of the different settings.

These rooms, however, are not just for weddings. If you’re putting on a business function, the Ballroom is perfect for large keynote speeches, while the Ghirardelli Room is great for board meetings; there are six smaller banquet rooms and plenty of overnight accommodations, too.

Regardless of the type of event you hold here, your guests will appreciate the hotel’s comfortable guestrooms and proximity to everything San Francisco is known for: Union Square and all its stores (hey, you never know when someone will need to rush out for a new pair of stockings or a replacement computer), trendy SoMa restaurants and clubs, the theater district, Chinatown and Fisherman’s Wharf. The Hotel Whitcomb really does offer the perfect mix of vintage hospitality and urban convenience.

CEREMONY CAPACITY: The Whitcomb Ballroom holds 400 seated, and the Ghirardelli Room 100 seated guests. Some standing guests can also be accommodated.

EVENT/RECEPTION CAPACITY: The Whitcomb Ballroom holds 400 seated or 600 standing guests, and the Ghirardelli Room up to 100 seated or standing guests.

MEETING CAPACITY: There are 9 rooms that accommodate 8–400 seated guests.

Fees & Deposits

For weddings, a deposit is required to reserve your date. The event balance is payable 14 business days prior to the event along with a guest count guarantee. Wedding packages start at $35/person; some packages include champagne toast. Menus can be customized.

For other special events and business functions, a deposit is required and varies depending on the services and menu selected. Room rental/setup fees may apply. Call for more specific information.
