Why We Like This Place
In a wonderfully inspired revitalization of a historic building, Hidden Chateau & Gardens not only offers a charming setting for your wedding, but also gives a peek back to the early days of the San Fernando Valley when silent film stars–and their horses–made this area their home.
Built in 1934 by Francis Lederer, a true luminary of Hollywood’s silent era, the Chateau, part of a 300-acre estate, was actually the barn for his wife’s beloved horse, Gypsy. The peak-roofed stone and adobe structure is an homage to California mission architecture (Mr. Lederer’s favorite style), right down to the jutting stone walls with arched walkways and the heavy wooden double-doors in the front. The façade is softened with profuse greenery and flowering plants atop stone pillars. All the original stone was actually quarried from the estate’s property, and in 1974 the building, which by then housed a gallery started by Mrs. Lederer and friends to showcase artifacts from Mexico, was named a Historical Cultural Monument. Sadly, in 1994, the building was badly damaged in the Northridge earthquake but carefully re-built to its original specs–and with the original materials.
That’s good news, because under the careful stewardship of its current occupant, Hidden Chateau and Gardens has reinvigorated this 1.5-acre piece of history by integrating the old barn, now a flourishing antique and design gallery. Inside, the building’s stone-walled stalls have been turned into inviting nooks filled with vintage and unusual finds as well as unique paintings and jewelry by local artists. Antique chandeliers hang from the high-beamed ceilings. Even the two back nooks, set aside as rooms for the bride and groom, are adorned with one-of-a-kind pieces.
Ceremonies and receptions are held outside, where a clever use of space has given each area its own feel even as they all flow together. On the right side of the building, the Spanish tile roof extends to create a breezy side portico, ideal for cocktails or stand-up receptions. Enter through old iron gates and you’re met by the gentle sounds of a delightfully romantic fountain with cherub water bearers. At the far end is a long service bar, and to your right are large stone arches that open up to a leafy flagstone patio. The combination of flowering plants, succulents, pepper trees and multiple gurgling fountains placed throughout the gardens creates a private oasis and keeps the valley’s bustle at arm’s length.
Meandering cobblestone paths lead to tucked-away corners for smaller gatherings like rehearsal dinners. At the center of the property, an iron arch sets the stage for the ceremony area, anchored by a gazebo and framed by tall palms. The far garden can be filled with linen-draped dinner tables, or they’ll bring in a dance floor and string twinkling lights in the trees–perhaps a nod to the sparkling parties that old Hollywood once had up the hill.
