H.G. Fenton Ranch Resort and Spa

Description

At the end of the quiet country road that leads to H.G. Fenton Ranch, you come to a remarkable gate fashioned from brick pillars, and scalloped fencing made from well-seasoned wood and inset with wagon wheels. At the top of this distinctive structure is a wrought-iron sign that provides clues to this venue’s provenance. It depicts a wagon driver leading his team of six horses over the words “Bandy Canyon, H.G. Fenton.” The name belongs to Henry Gilbert Fenton, an early San Diego developer who once called this ranch home. He got his start as a child taking care of teamster horses—hence the recurring wagon theme. Later, his mule team helped clear land that became Hotel del Coronado, and he soon entered the construction and real estate business himself, building an empire that thrives today, more than 50 years after his death.

Fenton loved sleepy San Pasqual Valley, and spent much of his youth at this impressive 400-acre hideaway. The current owners, who appreciate the ranch’s natural beauty and historical significance, also recognized its potential as a site for one-of-a-kind special events and are continually restoring the property. Weddings here are particularly glorious.

Past the gate, a sun-dappled private driveway stretches for a half-mile to the secluded retreat. Every direction offers a visual feast of thriving greenery: prickly cactus, brightly flowering bushes, and a diversity of mature trees—graceful eucalyptus, stately spruce, wispy pepper trees, red crape myrtles, huge jade plants, and a hundred palm trees of varying species. A small, wooden footbridge with built-in benches and wagon-wheel railings is a picturesque place to enjoy the view overlooking a pristine creek. Brides can get dressed and primp nearby in an elegantly appointed cabin.

A gazebo encircled by white oleander trees makes a stunning site for a ceremony. As guests look on from a flower-trimmed lawn, they have a breathtaking view of the lush Bandy Canyon in the background. There are several options for the cocktail hour and reception: Ascend a bowed brick stairway to enjoy drinks and hors d’oeuvres poolside for a swanky, sophisticated setting. Cross the creek via a wooden footbridge to join friends and family in a magnificent pavilion. Or, assemble on a brick patio under a vine-covered pergola, warmed by an outdoor fireplace. This large level space also doubles as an excellent dance floor.

The patio abuts the grand lodge, a truly unique adobe building and one of the first built by the Weir Brothers, local builders who went on to win widespread fame for their adobes. An antique carriage occupies the roomy porte-cochère, lit by a massive Arts and Crafts-style metal chandelier. Handmade bluebird tiles brighten the doorway and foyer. Inside you’ll find exposed-beam ceilings, numerous fireplaces and a firepit, an enormous copper lazy susan on a terrazo-top table that weighs 3,000 pounds, and a huge wood-burning oven, among other unusual delights.

H.G. Fenton Ranch offers a multitude of choices, and most of them are like nothing you’ve seen before. And no matter which ones you select, you’ll receive assistance with every detail of your special occasion to ensure that it unfolds seamlessly.
