Why We Like This Place

Just like every bride is uniquely beautiful, so, too, is each private estate charming in its own way. Hazlwood boasts charm aplenty, beginning with a bucolic and secluded location in the foothills of Los Gatos. It’s only a few minutes off the highway, but Hazlwood’s congenial, storybook personality makes you feel as if you were dropped into the middle of a forest clearing in some enchanted land.

A meadow screened by tall trees doubles as a parking lot; a painted birdhouse and ivy-covered archway mark a footpath onto Hazlwood’s bi-level grounds. On a rise to the left sits a comely wood-frame home, whose broad wraparound decks can host outdoor gatherings. To the right, a rambling emerald-green lawn is edged with coastal redwoods. Just ahead, a magnificent waterfall and water garden ringed with river rocks, reedy bamboo and wild grasses glistens in the sunlight. The trickling of water and a breeze whispering through the treetops harmonizes with birdsong, while bullfrogs and fish dart among the water lilies. Just below the water garden is the Ceremony Lawn. A brick-bordered aisle makes a gentle descent to a simple white-columned pergola, set against a dense grove of sky-high redwood trees, nature’s chapel for your wedding vows.

During the social hour, encourage guests to mingle around the water garden and savor the crisp, green landscape. Have your coordinator set up bistro tables for a garden reception, made pretty and easy thanks to a quaint greenhouse nearby that holds the buffet.

If you prefer an indoor fête, then you’ll enjoy the Summer House. It lies at the end of a cut-flagstone path that meanders to the upper level of the grounds where grass and abundant trees continue the forest theme. The split-level facility has a spacious porch that looks out to the water garden. Have some fun with this old-fashioned element: Hang luminarias along the white railing; place a portable bar here to serve your signature cocktail; or use the homey backdrop for picturesque group portraits. The two rooms in the Summer House share a vaulted ceiling and are lined almost entirely with multipaned windows, all of which lend the nearly all-white interior a bright and airy atmosphere. The first room has polished wood floors and ceiling fans, and works equally well for casual gatherings or small, elegant candlelight dinners. A pair of French doors leads to a patio that’s mainly used for dancing. Up a step, an adjoining salon features a bar, fireplace and Italian tiled floor, making it a great choice for after-dinner dancing as well. Leave the French doors open here, and guests may want to step onto an adjacent brick terrace to dip and sway in the moonlight. Large groups can also use the lawn areas on the property along with the Summer House.

Hazlwood has one more arrow in its quiver of delights: James and Brenda Knipe, who cater many of the events here and are devoted to making your celebration special. We have it on a good authority that Brenda cooks up a storm; and since James is the brother of owner Robert Knipe, festivities at Hazlwood take on the convivial spirit of a real family affair. Together, they extend a genteel welcome to you and your loved ones.

CEREMONY CAPACITY: The Ceremony Lawn holds 250 seated guests.

EVENT/RECEPTION CAPACITY: The Garden accommodates up to 250 guests. The Summer House holds up to 75 seated or 150 standing guests.

Fees & Deposits

50% of the rental fee is required to reserve your date. The balance is due 30 days prior to the event. Rental fees range $3,000–7,500 depending on guest count. There is a 10% discount for Friday events. Meals start at $34.50/person. Tax, alcohol and service charge are additional.
