Description

At Hawthorne Lane TWO, earthiness meets sheer sophistication. Tucked away on one of downtown San Francisco's charming little side streets, this eatery serves modern California cuisine of the first order in a space that's simultaneously homey and snazzy. In other words, this is a place where it's possible to feel utterly comfortable while dining on some of the city's finest food.

This is the second incarnation of Hawthorne Lane, one of San Francisco's most celebrated restaurants, so it's owned and operated by the same people. They continue to serve cutting-edge cuisine, not only for their regular diners but also for engagement parties, rehearsal dinners and receptions.

Amidst the natural wood surfaces and soothing color scheme of taupes and browns, guests can gather in two different areas. Just past the copper and concrete front bar is the semi-private Lower Dining Room, whose circular booths and subdued lighting give it a club-like ambiance. Simple flowers set on white linens is all you need in the way of decoration. The open kitchen and wood-burning stove are visible from here and allow partygoers to see how dishes like Seared Atlantic Salmon and Sweet Pea Risotto are expertly prepared.

Up a few stairs is the Mezzanine, a more private space separated from the restaurant by tasteful bamboo screens. It works well for a cocktail reception or an intimate sit-down dinner. However, you can reserve both areas together if you need more square footage or like the idea of having your guests flow from appetizers and drinks in one place to dining à table in the other. The entire restaurant can be bought out for exclusive events as well.

The large 1922 building that houses Hawthorne Lane TWO offers an additional pair of venues for weddings and other festivities. Upstairs, the renowned Crown Point Press lends an artistic element to events: Between the high-beamed ceilings and polished wooden floors you'll find gorgeous etchings and wood block prints. Parties often start with passed hors d'oeuvres in the lobby, followed by dinner in the art-filled exhibition room beyond. The Tom Marioni Studio, with its private entrance on Howard Street, is a cozy spot for a small group. Original pieces of the artist's work accent the room, and a separate bar area with an antique upright piano makes for a lively cocktail hour.

No matter where you celebrate in this building, Hawthorne Lane TWO's delectable cuisine remains central to the experience. The menu has been designed by two chefs who use only fresh, local and sustainable ingredients, creating food that showcases what's available at the farmer's market. They also prize straightforward dishes such as Cast-Iron Cooked Chicken or Grilled Pork Chops with an Asparagus Salad to start, and Meyer Lemon Pie for dessert. The warm ambiance and satisfying fare here make you feel like you're attending a lovely dinner party at the home of a good friend—one who really knows how to cook.

Fees & Deposits

50% of the food and beverage minimum is required to reserve your date. A portion is due 90 days prior to the event and the balance is due on the day of the event. Rental fees range $0–1,400 depending on the space rented. Meals range $35–65/person. Tax, alcohol and a 20% service charge are additional.

Availability

Available for special events Monday–Friday 11:30am–10pm, Saturday 5pm–10pm. Other times are available for buyouts of the entire restaurant.
