Description
The Harlyne J. Norris Pavilion is like a versatile actor: while its main role is as a performing arts center, it plays so many other parts beautifully. And one of its tour de force performances is as a wedding and special event location.
Completed in 1999, this relatively young facility fits right in with its residential Rolling Hills neighbors. The entrance is marked by a pair of graceful Jacaranda trees, whose summertime display of purple flowers is dazzling. (Note to brides and grooms: it’s said that if you walk underneath a Jacaranda and one of the blossoms falls on your head, you’ll be favored by fortune.)
During events, the circular parking court in front of the pavilion is transformed into a fabulous spot for a ceremony or cocktail reception. The area is blocked off to automobiles, portable landscaping is brought in, and the fountain in the center sprays slender streams of water into the air. Flanked by the pavilion on one side and backed by a tree-covered hill, the site is very private and quiet—especially on weekends, when you have the facility all to yourselves.
The sunny court is often used in conjunction with the pavilion’s foyer, a cool, inviting room with a striking black-topped mirrored bar. Skylights in the 25-foot ceiling cast interesting light designs on the walls and floor, and keep the resident trees thriving. The two spaces complement each other well, and there’s an easy flow between them.
Foyer doors open into the ballroom, a dramatic venue with rich, faux-cherrywood paneling, translucent domed chandeliers, and a high black ceiling. State-of-the-art lighting makes it possible to create more drama by spotlighting certain people or areas, while high-tech sound equipment allows you to customize your music. An adjoining marble-floored mini-foyer provides a separate (and private) entrance, and also enables the bridal couple to make a grand entrance into a room already filled with elegantly set tables—and eagerly waiting guests.
The pavilion’s pice de résistance, however, is revealed when you open the ballroom drapes. What you see is a sun-splashed trellised courtyard, enclosed by a vibrant green wall of trees. Flowering vines add color, and a fountain trickles in one corner. This little piece of heaven is like a magnet, drawing guests outside to mingle and simply enjoy nature’s caress.
No performance can take place without a good director, and when you host your celebration at the pavilion, you’ll have an inspired one: Thank Goodness It’s Sofia, a catering and event planning company that handles events here. This culinary team, known for their imaginative cuisine and decor, turns every event into a work of art.
The Harlyne J. Norris Pavilion’s primary goal has been to enrich the South Bay community by fostering the performing arts. Little did they know how many peoples’ lives they’d enrich by fostering weddings and special events, too.
