Guglielmo Winery

Description

There is practically no event that this versatile venue can’t handle. Corporate dinners, private parties, seminars and bottle-your-own-wine bashes keep this family winery hopping all year long. They even host a Harvest Festival complete with a grape stomping competition, and a Holiday Gift Faire in December. But from the first weekend in May through the second weekend in October, the winery’s charming Villa Emile Event Center is most popular for weddings.

Emilio Guglielmo, whose family had been making wines in Italy for countless generations, came to the Santa Clara Valley in 1908 and by 1925 he had established his winery in Morgan Hill. Today, Emilio’s grandsons run the winery, and their custom-designed event space, Villa Emile, is a pleasing complement to their award-winning winery. Whether your event is a "Bottle Your Own" celebration where you can design your own personalized wine labels, or a day of "wine, food and fire dancers," Villa Emile lets you be creative.

Villa Emile is immediately adjacent to the winery itself. Pass through the iron gates, topped by a stained-glass window with the family name, "Guglielmo," encircled by grapevines, and you’ll find yourself in the courtyard. This area consists of a cobblestone patio bordered by beds of assorted flowers, an appropriate setting for small parties or pre-dinner drinks and hors d’oeuvres. Nearby is a large marble bar where wine, champagne and beer are served under an arbor covered by a luxuriant 80-year-old grapevine. A redwood pergola and concrete walkway separate the courtyard from the larger event space, a vast green lawn where tables and chairs can be set up—with umbrellas, if the weather is hot. At one end of this lawn is an enormous covered concrete stage supported by rugged sandstone pillars (perfect for live music or a DJ). In front of the stage, a large dance floor invites you to get out there and boogie. At the other end of the lawn is a charming red-tile-roofed shrine to St. Francis, where couples often exchange wedding vows. To the right, a new building contains a spacious, beautifully appointed dressing room for the bride and her attendants. A small balcony off this room overlooks the vineyard and rolling hills, and is a favorite spot for wedding photos.

The structures here—all built out of terracotta stucco—seem to have sprung from the earth as naturally as the grapevines themselves, and their red tile roofs remind us of California’s Spanish heritage. Geraniums, lilies-of-the-nile, and petunias are colorful accents in front of the stage and along the paths. In this lovely setting, with its relaxed, old-California ambiance, you and your guests will feel that time spent at Guglielmo Winery is time well spent indeed.
