Why We Like This Place

The exterior of the Galleria building at the San Francisco Design Center gives you no clue as to what’s inside—all you see is sky and trees, reflected in a gleaming, four-story façade of more than 700 individual glass panes. Walk through the front doors, however, and you see the world as it would be if top designers were in charge.

The main event space is directly ahead of you, and it becomes immediately clear that the building’s architects have made excellent use of the four stories they had to play with. They’ve created a soaring atrium with a retractable skylight that literally brings the outdoors inside: On nice days, real air and sunshine flood in. The whole space radiates warmth and contemporary sophistication with its open, airy feel, Italian tile floor and exposed brick walls.

Just about any kind of event would feel at home here. The polished light maple hardwood floor in the center can be used for dining or dancing; the elevated stage is right for presentations, a performance or a band, and there’s a built-in beverage bar as well. Rising on all sides are three levels of balconies, where tête-à-tête tables provide an excellent vantage for people-watching.

On weekdays the Galleria showcases designer furniture, but on weeknights and weekends it comes into its own as a party venue. With its state-of-the-art sound and light system, its stage and dance floor, and its versatile seating options, it’s especially suitable for corporate galas, creative receptions and cocktail parties. Not surprisingly, the Galleria has been discovered by high tech, multimedia companies and the media, who love the possibilities it offers. They frequently bring in incredible props and produce large-scale audiovisual presentations to launch a new website or product. Other “transformations” have included a Casablanca Night, and a White Christmas party complete with “snow.”

There are so many pluses to this unique space, you can do almost anything with it! Entertain an intimate gathering of 100, or throw a bash for 1,600. Take advantage of the full-scale sound system, which allows a band or DJ to hook right in, or experiment with the theatrical lighting to make a dramatic statement on the dance floor and stage. For some truly festive sparkle, set the Tivoli lights on “chasing.” Guests can mingle with the crowd on the main floor, or steal away to an upper tier for a quiet conversation, and still feel part of the event.

While this facility is terrific for high-end corporate and private parties, don’t overlook the inventive possibilities for a wedding ceremony or reception. Picture the atrium awash in rose petals…or maybe palm trees and toucans for that tropical island ambiance…or a snow motif for winter nuptials. So go ahead and fantasize—truth is, for any event where you want a quality production with endless possibilities, the Galleria has the resources, the space and, above all, the style.

CEREMONY CAPACITY: The Galleria holds 400 seated guests.

EVENT/RECEPTION & MEETING CAPACITY: The Galleria can accommodate up to 1,000 seated or 1,600 standing guests; the first floor holds 400 seated or 1,000 standing, and 3 additional floors hold 200 more seated guests per floor.

Fees & Deposits

50% of the rental fee is required as a deposit to secure your date; the balance is payable 30–90 days prior to the event. The rental fee starts at $6,000 and varies depending on guest count and space rented. Sound and light technicians (at $50/hour per technician) are available. A facility manager and security guards are required; call for specific rates.
