Description
Is there anything more romantic than Paris in the evening…more sensual than a French kiss…or more evocative than the lingering scent of Chanel No. 5? You have to hand it to the French; they really know how to create the mood for love. Happily, French 75 in Burbank is doing an excellent job of creating their own version of amour. Wedding celebrations in this charming, classic bistro satisfy the palate as well as the senses. One step inside and you leave Burbank’s high-powered media district behind. The cool, dark reception area, with its stamped tin ceiling, vintage posters and deep red walls, sets the tone for French 75’s tasty mixture of Montmartre bohemian style and urban Americana. As you walk through the entry foyer, your eye is immediately drawn to the bar and lounge on the right. Imagine the vibrancy of Moulin Rouge sifted through modern sensibilities and you have an idea of this dramatic space, with its Art Nouveau carved bar chairs with red leather seats, plush banquettes upholstered in red velvet and dazzling light fixtures of red and white milk glass.
Continuing past the red bar, you’ll find the Left Bank Lounge, a très chic spot for intimate receptions with a melange of art moderne-inspired elements like the black-tiled fireplace, charcoal gray velvet walls and leather sofas strewn with textured silk and velvet pillows. Completing the look are deco-style crystal chandeliers and vintage photos—an insouciant blend of the kinds of treasures you’d pick up at the very popular Paris flea markets.
The main restaurant is divided into three dining areas. Light, bright and enlivened with a partially exposed kitchen, the Grand Salon is the quintessential bistro setting. Here, an etched glass entryway opens to dark wood floors and long banquettes down one side of the room with tables down the other. The Petit Salon, opposite a large glass-enclosed wine cellar, accommodates smaller groups and features curved leather banquettes and a large carved “window” that can be draped off for privacy or opened to create a sense of flow with the Grand Salon. For the ultimate seclusion, there’s the Salon Privé, a high-style, private dining room with a copper-toned decorative fireplace, coffered ceiling and artistic grouping of framed mirrors. Hidden behind one of the mirrors is an LCD screen for showing home videos of the bride and groom.
But perhaps the most popular reception area is the large Garden Patio in front. Shielded by thick hedges and cooled with ceiling fans under a stone-pillared awning, this outdoor spot combines the best of California weather and Parisian design. The menu (served inside or out) reflects that same tasteful balance, with classic French dishes like rich onion soup, escargots and sole meunière alongside Gallic interpretations of American favorites like herb roasted chicken with white cheddar mac and cheese.
Good food and beautiful décor—what a delicious way to celebrate l’amour.
