Frantoio Ristorante

Description

Italians seem to have an unerring sense of style and design, and this gift is in splendid evidence at Frantoio Ristorante. Located beside a protected wetland at Mill Valley’s southern edge, Frantoio recreates the look of a Tuscan villa. That look starts with a classic Mediterranean exterior of high, sand-colored walls, a tiled roof and olive trees out front. From the entrance, you pass through a low-ceilinged bar area that opens out into a great room, the heart of this place.

With booths along the back wall and plentiful banquettes and tables, the Main Room is the primary site for receptions. It’s a breathtaking space, whose high ceiling—easily 35 feet—rises to a skylight-pierced apex of terracotta slabs resting atop bold rust-colored wooden trusses. Two large clerestory windows at the east and west ends immerse the room in indirect light. The south wall is lined with brick ovens and opens toward the bar, while the opposite wall, which curves slightly inward, is coated with three layers of incausto and finished with a glaze of hand-applied beeswax, an old Tuscan-Renaiassance tradition. The wall’s wispy swirls of gray anchor a room-wide palette of creamy whites, umbers, olive greens and other grays. The colors, along with the room’s spaciousness and the textures of its materials—tile, terracotta, wood, glass, concrete, steel and stone—convey simultaneous grandeur and simplicity, drama and serenity, expansiveness and intimacy.

Rehearsal dinners often take place in the Banquet Room, separated from the Main Room by large sliding glass doors. Here, light olive green walls rise under a slanting room-length skylight of translucent panels (they look like Japanese paper) mounted between slender black I-beams atop columns of light wood. Original paintings with strong yellows and oranges make deft counterpoints to the green walls. Some parties open the doors wide and use this space for the band setup or for dancing. On the other side of the Main Room is the Olive Press Room, popular for small rehearsal dinners. Set apart by big glass windows, it has a gray tile floor and yellow- and green-glazed brick walls. Its most notable feature is a working press that crushes olives with two giant granite wheels. In the fall, Frantoio, the only U.S. restaurant to have a working olive press on site, presses bottlings of extra virgin oil for select clients.

Frantoio’s stylish bar, with its blond woods, recessed track lighting and delicate iron frame stools, is the sort of place where people swirl martinis as they catch up on the day’s events. The bar leads to a patio that’s surrounded by high walls bordered by lavender, rosemary and olive trees. This completely private space can be set up for a small wedding ceremony, cocktail reception or al fresco dinner. Speaking of food, Frantoio’s ambiance is the second most important reason its large local clientele returns again and again. With its sophisticated Italian cuisine, and consistent rating as one of the Bay Area’s Top 100 Restaurants, Frantoio has earned its reputation as a dining destination—the place to go for a special dinner.

Certainly one of life’s greatest pleasures is inhabiting a beautiful place, even if it’s only for a single day. Think of Frantoio as a pleasure palace, where the pleasure is actually enhanced because you can share it with friends and loved ones.
