First Christian Church of North Hollywood

Description

If you’re in search of a sincere, spiritual environment for your wedding ceremony, or are marrying someone of a different faith than yours, or if you wish to bring in your own officiant—whether priest or rabbi—then First Christian Church awaits you. Part of a religious brotherhood known as the Disciples of Christ, First Christian has a philosophy of tolerance: "whatever brings people closer to God" is their refreshing attitude.

The church itself grew out of an evangelical tent meeting held in 1924 when the San Fernando Valley was a vast farming community. Through the years, First Christian has been an active leader in its growing neighborhood, and is the founder of a theater, an Interfaith Food Pantry, and a nursery school. It’s also frequently used as a location for movies and television shows, most notably as the church featured in the TV series, "7th Heaven." Today, the beautiful landmark building in North Hollywood can also be the site of your memorable wedding and reception.

The red brick structure is a Philadelphia Colonial design, with sleek white columns supporting the portico. The steeple has a spire of verdigris topped by an unassuming cross. A small garden leads to the reception entrance. One of the sites available for your ceremony is a charming redwood chapel that will not only envelop your guests in a cozy warmth, but will afford everyone a clear view of the bridal couple. First Christian provides "unity candles" for couples who wish to uphold this romantic candle-lighting tradition. As the bride and groom light the candle together, their faces shine in the soft glow of the flickering flames, and their family and friends become part of this intimate ritual. The chapel’s electronic organ or a soloist of your choice can contribute to the heartwarming mood.

Then there’s the sanctuary, stunning in its elegant simplicity and evoking our colonial past, with dark wood pews, tall multipaned windows, and a white railing fronting the balcony. The modest altar is also done in white and wood, with a plain cross and candles the only ornamentation. A skylight over the pulpit brings in a natural glow, complemented by graceful brass chandeliers with frosted glass shades and matching wall sconces. A truly spectacular pipe organ sits on the chancel, just waiting to play your wedding march. Receptions are held in the Social Hall, a spacious air-conditioned room with polished wood floors and a proscenium stage. A full kitchen is at the disposal of your caterer. One of the nice amenities of First Christian Church is the Bride’s Room, a lovely pastel retreat with makeup mirrors and a full-length looking glass. The closets are thoughtfully stocked with everything from an iron to safety pins, and there’s plenty of room for the wedding party to prepare or just relax.

The church’s pastor, the delightful Reverend Bock (see his entry in the Service Directory) believes that "the wedding ceremony belongs to the couple, not the clergyman." He loves to prepare ceremonies that reflect the couple’s wishes, and is especially skillful at making family rituals or other personal touches an integral part of the ceremony. He’s also happy to co-officiate, be it with a Spanish-speaking priest or a traditional rabbi. Reverend Bock and the wedding staff at First Christian Church are experts at making everyone feel welcome. With the recent addition of services spoken in Spanish, the FCCNH can now offer weddings officiated in Spanish as well.
