Description
At Farallon, the pull and mythic lore of life under the sea colors every visual and culinary element. This extraordinary underwater-themed eatery submerges diners in a fantasy that, quite frankly, would have wowed Jules Verne. You’re not actually 20,000 leagues under the sea, but the custom-made jellyfish chandeliers and the trompe l’oeil portals revealing the "ocean" beyond, paired with the restaurant’s distinctive coastal cuisine make this whimsical deep-sea vision a delectable reality.
Created by Pat Kuleto—the innovative "culinary entrepreneur" behind over 170 restaurants including San Francisco’s Boulevard and Jardinire—Farallon presents a truly immersive experience, where décor meets cuisine seamlessly. Guests contemplate the blue-green murals of octopuses and kelp while noshing on roasted stuffed Monterey calamari, or sit in nautilus-shaped booths sampling hamachi tartare. As Kuleto himself says: "You consume the design with every bite of the food."
Located near Union Square, Farallon occupies the street level of the historic Elk’s Club Building, and sea-loving couples have long been drawn to the variety of event spaces available. If your guest list is long, you can buy out the gorgeous restaurant, with its Jelly Bar and Nautilus Room. In a past wedding here, the bride wore a flowing blue mermaid gown, and adorned her wedding cake with real Pacific seashells. The adjacent Wine Hold, a 12-seat semi-private dining room, accommodates small rehearsal dinners and features a luminous painting of a ship’s hold filled with wine bottles.
In three private dining rooms on the fourth floor, the undersea motif of the restaurant continues in beautiful fashion. The Beluga Room, which is perfect for large seated dinners, was designed to resemble the ballroom of a sunken luxury liner in-transit. Round tables clad with white linens and sparkling crystal set the tone. And as the soft dinner lighting plays off the blues of the sea murals on the curved wall, octopuses and other aquatic creatures seem to swim by.
Across the hall, the Sevruga and Osetra Rooms offer more intimate spaces that are tailor-made for cocktail receptions or rehearsal dinners. A blown-glass aquarium and wine library line the walls of the Sevruga, while the Osetra has 10-foot French windows that overlook Union Square. Custom-made glass chandeliers in the shape of organic sea creatures provide the lighting, and images of fish and ships add to the appeal of both rooms.
In all of the private event areas at Farallon, guests can expect stellar service and the creative, sophisticated food that has made the restaurant famous. Chef/owner Mark Franz, who wants every dish to be perfect, says, "Our goal is to serve food that is straightforward, clean and elegant." Flexibility marks their approach to wedding menus, which have boasted oyster bars, ice sculptures, caviar and vodka themes, and grand shellfish stations. Every item, from the ahi tuna spring rolls to the pan roasted striped bass, is cooked to order, and extra flourishes are the norm. Desserts here are not to be missed: Executive pastry chef and author Emily Luchetti is recognized around the country for her award-winning sweet creations.
Within the ebb and flow of the San Francisco restaurant scene, Farallon has anchored itself as an award-winning and unique piece of culinary real estate in a notoriously competitive city of foodies. For those with a penchant for seafood beyond compare and a dining environment to match, this is one compelling place to celebrate.
