Why We Like This Place

Inspired by a legendary friendship between an English trader and an Indonesian spice merchant, this celebrated restaurant in the heart of San Francisco’s Union Square district has an air of romance and adventure powerful enough to sweep anyone off their feet. A three-level space modeled after the Asian trading warehouses of a century ago, it has been featured in Gourmet Magazine and on the San Francisco Chronicle’s Top Ten list. It’s sure to top your list as well.

Step through the portals and into the robust world of the exotic Marketplace. A dramatic dining area featuring dark tables, plush banquettes and gleaming hardwood floors, it’s a festive setting for your event, be it buffet, sit-down dinner, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres pre-dinner or dancing après. Imagine a first dance, cake-cutting, announcements or award ceremony taking place amidst the elegant sheen of this spacious chamber. Playful touches like bamboo plaiting and antique artifacts enhance the Asian ambiance. The spectacular Dragon Bar snakes along one full side of the room and large, shell-filled, gossamer chandeliers hang from a soaring ceiling two stories overhead. The high ceiling also makes for awesome acoustics, and a discreet performance space at the front of the restaurant is the ideal spot for your entertainment, whether it’s a jazz trio, DJ, Flamenco guitarist or emcee.

For a great view of the Marketplace and its action, ascend via stairs or elevator to the regal calm of the restaurant’s open horseshoe-shaped mezzanine. Here, under the slow whirl of palmetto leaf fans, in a soothing setting reminiscent of British Colonial Southeast Asia, your guests can dine in imperial style in one or all of the softly carpeted semi-private salons. The pale gold walls of the E&O Room are subtly illumined by windows affording Sutter Street views. Chandeliers, spots, wall sconces and candles light up the walls and botanical prints of the North Mezzanine, where thick velvet draperies offer additional options for cordoning off the space. Ivory linens add just the right touch of formality and a creamy canvas upon which to place food every bit as tantalizing and inventive as the environment. Dinners are served family style so that guests can sample a variety of exceptional dishes. Choose from hors d’oeuvres like Grilled Ginger Sesame Steak Satay, Crisp Fried Duck Rolls and Sweet Corn Fritters followed by a salad of Mizuna and Organic Greens and entrées that include Wood Grilled Petite Sirloin, Grilled Ahi Tuna, Oven Roasted Thai Basil Chicken Breast and Tandoori Salmon cooked in the restaurant’s marvelous wood-burning ovens.

For a clubby ultra-private atmosphere, descend the stairs that lead from the Marketplace to the appropriately named Cinnabar Room, where guests can mingle in intimate fashion. The full bar, cozy leather and velvet seating, spicy color scheme and dreamy lighting give it a relaxed, lounge-like feel. Scotch? Brandy? Fine wine? Rehearsal dinner? Corporate gathering? Winemaker’s party? You get the picture; this is the place where the outlook is rosy and the company’s always superb. After your celebration, there’s no need to take off right away. Step out into the pulsating, stylish center of San Francisco where you can sightsee and overnight at some of the best hotels in the world.
