Description
Completed in 1905, the Dolce Hayes Mansion is one of the South Bay’s most distinctive and historic structures. Mary Hayes Chynoweth built the 65-room Mediterranean Revival-style mansion to replace an earlier Victorian home destroyed in a fire. Although she died before the mansion was finished, her two sons—politicians and publishers of the San Jose Mercury and the San Jose Herald—and their families lived in the house for four decades. Known as Edenvale Estate, it was a center of social and political activity for the Santa Clara Valley until 1952, when it was sold to the city of San Jose.
Sadly, the mansion stood empty for many years. No one was sure what to do with it until 1991, when the City of San Jose proposed that it be turned into a high-tech meeting facility that also offered spa and fitness services. The subsequent $12-million renovation transformed the Hayes Mansion into a luxurious special events site while keeping its turn-of-the-century character. A wide circular drive leads to the front entrance, a four-story tower topped by a red-tile roof. Wedding ceremonies and receptions can be held on the lush lawns surrounding the house, or on a separate circular lawn in the center of the drive. Bordered by beds of marigolds and dotted with towering palm trees, the emerald-green lawns create an inviting, manicured setting. With the stately mansion in the background, a garden party is very appropriate here.
Indoor celebrations are equally delightful. The rooms adjoining the main lobby, the Folsom Library, the Everis Anson Parlor and the Jay Orley Parlor, are consummate examples of early 1900s artistry. The library’s coffered mahogany ceiling and glass-fronted bookcases create just the right cozy-yet-formal ambiance for post-ceremony champagne toasts. The two parlors across the hall feature a mahogany-manteled fireplace, brass-and-glass Victorian chandeliers, mahogany molding and wainscoting, and a bay-windowed alcove. If you have a small reception, host a seated dinner in one of the parlors and reserve the other for music and dancing. This combination is just one of the options you’ll have at the Dolce Hayes Mansion; should you choose another, you’ll find that every room has been meticulously restored and furnished with fine period details. If you’re a lover of Victorian style, you’ll be thoroughly entranced by this new venue for special events, corporate functions and weddings.
