Dogpatch Studios

Why We Like This Place

For more than 45 years, an irrepressible creative spirit has thrived within the walls of Dogpatch Studios. This movie/photography studio has witnessed film shoots by local and international filmmakers, photographers and models at work, and more than a few fabulous events. Given the history of this space, it’s no surprise that weddings here often take on an artistic flair.

Situated in the hip "Dogpatch" quarter of Potrero Hill, the recently renovated three-story building shares a block with other industrial businesses. The spare exterior hardly hints at the expansive areas inside, but once in the door, you enter a cavernous space known as the Main Stage. Boasting a 30-foot peaked ceiling, exposed wooden beams, and concrete walls and floors, this room is so large that car commercials have been shot here. In fact, you can actually drive cars, props and oversized decorations straight into the Studio, thanks to a steel-and-glass sliding "barn" door. Because of its enormous dimensions and blank-slate quality, the First Floor can be transformed into a world of your choosing. One recent bash featured Earth Circus performers hanging from the rafters amongst giant white statues lit with colored lights; the mesmerized guests dined at round tables dressed in white linens and flowers, while the performers circulated. You can, of course, do something much more traditional with the space: host a seated ceremony and buffet dinner using draped fabric, screens, colorful floral arrangements, and custom lighting to enliven the studio and personalize your event.

Take the elevator or stairs to the second floor, and you’ll find the Gallery, a smaller (and yes, more conventional) party space with a polished bamboo floor, white walls, and windows that look out over Potrero Hill. It has a refined, art-gallery feel to it, and is often set up as a bar or lounge during celebrations. Couches, rugs and even pool tables make it into a vibrant, yet casual, hangout. For a more formal atmosphere, serve hors d’oeuvres and champagne butler-style, while your friends and family gather around tall, linen-clad cocktail tables for oh-so-sophisticated conversation.

The Penthouse Studio is the icing on the cake at Dogpatch, and takes full advantage of its third-floor perch. A wall of windows opens out onto a deck with a 280-degree view from Alameda Island to Twin Peaks, including the Bay Bridge and the Bay, SBC Park and the downtown skyline. Inside, bamboo flooring, white walls, and an 18-foot atrium ceiling—combined with the stellar city views—make a lovely backdrop for a small ceremony or an intimate buffet. At a recent daytime reception, vintage blue linens, hydrangea flowers, and blue china and flatware looked absolutely brilliant in the white sunlight pouring through the windows.

Each space within Dogpatch Studios offers something unique, and the good news is that you can use one, two or all three of them in any combination. For example, have your ceremony in the Penthouse, pour cocktails in the Gallery, then return to the Penthouse for a seated dinner. Or stage the entire affair—with dancing—in the Main Stage. You pick the room configuration that works best for you. After that, the only requirement for an extraordinary event is a little creativity.
