Dinah’s Garden Hotel and Restaurant

Why We Like This Place

When local landmark Dinah’s Garden Hotel teamed up with the legendary Trader Vic’s restaurant, it was a marriage made in heaven. For decades, Dinah’s had been treating guests to their unique brand of hospitality—imaginative accommodations, eclectic art and statuary from around the world and eight luxuriantly landscaped acres. Lured by sparkling waterfalls and serene grottos, sweethearts would head to Dinah’s for a romantic getaway. The only elements missing were on-site catering and facilities for wedding celebrations. Enter Trader Vic’s, the upscale restaurant group that’s world-famous for exotic furnishings, delectable fusion cuisine, and the original Mai Tai.

Though their restaurant family spans the globe as far away as Bangkok, the Palo Alto locale has been lavished with amazing treasures from the personal collection of the franchise’s colorful originator, Victor Bergeron. The entry is guarded by a pair of 19th-century Japanese Temple lions, and the sumptuously appointed interior is like an elegant port of call: a large Javanese stone bull dates from 900 A.D.; carved shields and ancient tapestries deck the walls; a vibrant mural portrays a technicolor island paradise. The Polynesian-themed bar and outdoor terrace is a popular nightspot, and makes a cool setting for lively after-parties.

Your main event unfolds in Dinah’s Ballroom, whose aesthetic is tamer though equally impressive. The sophisticated ballroom is dressed with wood trim and Brazilian cherrywood floors polished to a high gleam. Brass chandeliers suspended from a soaring cathedral ceiling and multipaned clerestory windows lend a luminous grandeur. Paintings of South Pacific scenes accent corners, while banks of French doors open to a spacious L-shaped terrace. Begin with an intimate ceremony on the tiled section beneath the shade of an awning, with Chinese lanterns or floral embellishments strung on the rafters; then toast the momentous occasion (with Mai Tais, of course!) in the adjoining open-air section, where ferns, palms and straw umbrellas create a festive atmosphere.

Part of the fun of a wedding here is the remarkable food. Delicacies such as Bongo Bongo Soup or Beef Cho Cho are as popular as traditional favorites, served up with a Trader Vic twist—think Hawaiian pork chops or Prime Rib from a Chinese wood- fired oven!

The hotel itself displays the same superior standards and attention to detail. A stroll through Dinah’s takes you past gardens brimming with waterfalls, and ponds teeming with giant multi-colored koi. Footbridges and Oriental gazebos invite stolen kisses, and statues of Buddha inspire quiet contemplation.

To further enhance your stay, each of Dinah’s 145 guestrooms is uniquely decorated with world-class art and priceless collectibles. Lagoon rooms embrace lush greenery and the sound of flowing water. The opulently arrayed Signature Suites take luxury to a new level. With themes like “Bali,” “Asian Sunset,” and “The Railroad Baron,” their deluxe amenities—such as a steam room, antiques, private lagoon decks, and a working model train—pamper, relax and amuse. A complimentary suite for the newlyweds and discounted rooms for your guests are “the sugar on top.” The morning after, enjoy brunch at Dinah’s retro-chic Poolside Grill.

For those with a penchant for adventure, a touch of whimsy and a yen for the extraordinary, Dinah’s Garden Hotel and Trader Vic’s is just the ticket.
