Courtyard by Marriott Monrovia

Why We Like This Place

The sophisticated entry with its travertine floors and chic display of calla lilies in individual vases is your first clue that something special is going on here. While Courtyards by Marriott have always enjoyed a well-deserved reputation as comfortable places to stay for business and travel, they're now shaking things up with a pilot program to turn select properties into "boutique" hotels. Fortunately for brides seeking a distinctive venue in the San Gabriel Valley, Monrovia is one of the chosen sites. Its new look and attitude are evident immediately, with an $11 million, top-to-bottom renovation and an incredibly helpful staff that greets you like a VIP.

The lobby and other public spaces have been redesigned with a modern, deco/Asian influence and lots of artistic touches, such as frosted-glass ceiling fixtures and a series of stainless steel, spiral sculptures by the check-in area. The clever use of various metallics (like the copper-toned tables in the Grand Foyer where your guests can sign in) creates visual interest, set against the hotel's warm woods, upholstered seating and richly colored carpeting.

If you host your ceremony or reception in the Monterey Room, you'll appreciate its special perks. It has a private entrance for your guests and vendors, as well as its own restrooms. And it comes with a view, too: Picture windows frame a landscape of palm trees and flowers outside.

Larger receptions often begin with cocktails in the Grand Foyer, which runs the length of the Grand Ballroom. After mingling over drinks here, guests move right into the Ballroom for the main festivities. Decorated in earth tones with textured wallpaper in a subtle circular pattern, it features a marble-topped bar in one corner and is large enough to seat 200 with a dance floor. (Some recent events have created an ethereal effect by draping gold tulle festooned with twinkle lights from the ceiling.) The hotel's catering staff takes pride in their continental menu, but they'll happily work with you to incorporate your own unique menu requests.

The renowned Botanical Gardens are a mere two miles away, so many wedding couples make the side trip with their photographer to capture photos. But within the hotel itself there are several album-worthy backdrops as well: One particularly nice spot is the wall of water cascading over hammered steel in a cozy nook off the main lobby…or, for something decidedly different, how about a few shots in the book-and-object-d'art-filled library? Since your friends and family are welcome to explore all the facilities on the first floor, they can enjoy these little hideaways for intimate conversation or after-dinner drinks. And if you just can't wait to see the pictures your guests themselves have taken, you can plug in all their latest electronic devices and have an impromptu screening in your tech-savvy, sleekly upscale, complimentary wedding-night guestroom.
