Why We Like This Place
Remember how it feels to stay at a luxurious retreat in Hawaii? Every space open to the outdoors… your skin caressed by soft breezes…the sense of bone-deep relaxation and ease…. That’s what Calistoga Ranch feels like, minus the humidity and the long plane ride. The Ranch is 157 acres of natural beauty, cradled in a little box canyon just a few minutes away from Napa Valley’s famed Silverado Trail.
Calistoga Ranch is designed for lovers of the outdoors who also appreciate quality, privacy and the good life. All lodges and event sites are indoor/outdoor venues, constructed of local stone and wood; furnishings are simple and elegant. The overall effect is rustic and serene, yet sophisticated.
The perfect Wine Country ambiance for small events is found at the Poolside Patio, which overlooks a young vineyard that spills down the hill toward the entrance of the resort. Flowering oleander trees lend color and shade. For evening celebrations, not even the most expensive event producer could create a more stunning backdrop: a Napa Valley sunset.
If you follow the driveway winding up the canyon, past rugged forested hillsides and the cottage-like guest lodges, you come upon the Wine Cave. Dug straight into the existing rock, and designed specifically for special events, it’s a beautiful and unusual reception site. Passing under an arbor and through massive oak doors, you enter an arched hallway, illuminated by huge circular chandeliers. At the end of this room is a dramatically lit bas-relief frieze carved into the stone, providing a striking focal point. The Founder’s Room off to one side is a smaller version of the main hall: Vaulted and furnished with a massive table, it’s an impressive setting for a rehearsal dinner or small reception.
Emerging from the Wine Cave, you face a petite spring-fed lake, complete with a few resident ducks. The Lakehouse Restaurant sits at the edge of the water and has a scenic view, especially from its decks. The Lakehouse Restaurant Deck, which is outfitted with a pair of fireplaces plus an outdoor bar, is reserved for restaurant patrons. The Lakeview Patio Deck is where events are held. Sheltered by a covered trellis, it’s connected by tall glass doors to two small private rooms within the restaurant. Combined, the rooms can accommodate a cozy reception of up to 40; however, they generally serve as places for a bar setup, cake or cheese display, or an espresso bar. When the glass doors are open, there’s an easy flow indoors and out.
As the bride and groom must be guests of Calistoga Ranch to hold a wedding at the resort, it’s worth describing a typical guest lodge. At a minimum, each one has a generously proportioned bedroom with his-and-her bathrooms, connected by a covered deck to a living room with a wood-burning fireplace. An outdoor bath garden is attached to each, and some lodges also have hot tubs. Cathedral ceilings, modern furnishings and a wet bar complete the picture of a habitat that’s in harmony with nature, yet profoundly luxurious. Guests can take advantage of the resort spa amenities, which include healing baths and a variety of massages and skin treatments.
Calistoga Ranch is an intimate setting for the couple who treasures the region’s native splendor. Though it’s close to the Bay Area—and even closer to the delights of the Napa Wine Country—the Ranch is a remarkable place where, as they say here, the passage of time is measured by the growing grapes, and every day is blessed with spirituality, peace and a touch of magic.
