Description
Savvy East Bay diners know where to go for a cool bar scene, high-caliber Nuevo Latino eats, and specialty cocktails: Café de La Paz. Since its opening in 1993, this splashy bistro has attracted a cadre of loyal fans, including several discriminating Here Comes The Guide staffers. Not only is the Café the “it” place for tasty tapas, exotic cocktails and nuevo latino cuisine, but it’s also a delicious setting for any celebration.
With storefront windows that frame the lively street action in Berkeley’s “Gourmet Ghetto,” the Café‘s bar and lounge is a prime spot for people-watching; your guests will also enjoy quaffing and noshing at the wooden bar or cabaret tables. Done in punchy shades of tomato and ochre, the lounge is decked out with eye-catching art and native crafts, a decorative theme also featured in the upstairs Dining Room. This inviting second-story restaurant/dining space is lavished in natural wood, with a slate tile fountain at one end overflowing with greenery. Whimsical mobiles and colored lights add extra sparkle to a row of windows overlooking the street.
If it’s a grand fiesta you’re after, then let the good times roll in the Fiesta Room, accessed via the downstairs lounge. Oak doors and chairs contribute rustic flavor, and a raised hardwood alcove is a sweet spot for the head table. At one end of the room a polished copper credenza set with shimmering tea lights lends a touch of eclectic glamour. Ready-made splashes of color come courtesy of authentic tribal artwork adorning walls faux-painted a golden maize. The warm room has a spacious feel, thanks to its high ceilings and a window alcove, which offers tempting glimpses of flowering plants in the outdoor Courtyard.
Tucked between the Café and a neighboring building, the Courtyard is lined with tall bamboo and leafy ficus flowing from ceramic pots, while hot pink bougainvillea supplies a dash of sass. The Courtyard’s focal point is a simple stone fountain in the center. Some couples exchange vows in this graceful refuge, while trickling water plays a tranquil accompaniment; others use the Courtyard for an outdoor cocktail hour before dining in the Fiesta Room.
Café de la Paz’s piquant ambiance inspires creativity: why not greet each guest with a signature libation—Cuban mojito, fresh-fruit margarita, or a gourmet tequila station? The Café will even help you spice up the cocktail hour with a Sangria bar and a spirited musical performance by award-winning Flamenco artists!
For many, the main attraction at Café de la Paz is the cuisine, and the Latin Fusion menus have something to please everyone—vegetarian dishes, fresh seafood, and plenty of beef for traditionalists. The Café even offers a tapas and fingerfood buffet, a fun way for guests to sample a variety of bright bursts of flavors.
The innovative founder of Café de la Paz is Russell Bass, who is currently converting his menus to 80% organic and sustainably produced and 100% GMO-free ingredients. He believes strongly in the concept of community, especially in the sense of “coming together.” With such a heartfelt objective, the cafe is just the place for your loved ones to gather together in honor of your own life-long union.
