Description
Say you’re the type who adores huge lawns and glorious old pepper trees, loves whitewashed wood buildings and running fences, and has always fantasized about arriving at your wedding ceremony in a horse-drawn carriage. You may want to talk to the people at Brookside Equestrian Center in Walnut.
This historic 28-acre property (where scenes from National Velvet, starring then twelve-year-old Elizabeth Taylor, were filmed in 1944) serves as the training headquarters for the U.S. Olympic equestrian team. It also serves up an initial impression of overwhelming greenness. Broadleaf trees of every kind—eucalyptus, sycamores, birches, Chinese elms, and big, gorgeous, gnarled pepper trees—dot the center’s incredibly well-manicured lawns, some of which span acres. The trees create pockets of deep, refreshing shade that alternate with beautifully tended, sunlit greens and gardens. In fact, the abundance of trees often keeps this site cooler than the surrounding area, which is something nice to keep in mind if you’re planning a summer wedding.
Most brides hold their ceremony and reception in the area near the main barn, a bright white two-story structure that fronts Brookside’s main lawn. To one side, partially shaded by a line of robust sycamores, is the Covered Arena, a huge open structure with a soaring cathedral roof that can comfortably hold up to 900 people. Renters can astroturf or parquet the Arena’s dirt floor and use the space any way they like: for tying the knot, hosting a dinner or for dancing. At night, lights strung around the Covered Arena’s sixteen columns and across its vast interior turn the building into a fantasy realm. Steps away at the edge of one of Brookside’s signature plush lawns, a simple gazebo beneath tall shade trees is where most couples say their vows.
But, thanks to Brookside’s extensive acreage, there are plenty of other lawns and park-like stretches you can choose among for every aspect of your celebration. Some couples even wed off-site, but come to Brookside to pose for their post-ceremony photos—a practice that the center happily accommodates. In any case, you can use the grounds however you wish, comfortable in the knowledge that your wedding is the only one at Brookside that day.
To make your event come to life, the center has a list of preferred vendors that it will gladly recommend, including two photographers who really know how to stage shots here. But you’re free to use your own professionals.
With its just-right combination of manicured good looks and at-ease country charm, this is the ultimate refined outdoor wedding venue. When you visit here to check things out, be sure you get the cook’s tour—you really do want to see the almost endless possibilities Brookside offers.
