Description
Aurobora Press is tucked away on a quiet street directly behind the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Located in a historic building in the heart of the South-of-Market art scene, it’s both a working artists’ studio and a fine arts gallery dedicated to the production and display of monotypes and unique works on paper.
The building was built in 1907 using brick from the rubble of the 1906 earthquake, and was formerly a firehouse owned by an insurance underwriting business. Historically, before there were municipal fire stations, underwriters had to fight the fires of those they insured!
Guests enter the gallery through the original arched doorway, which is topped with a glass transom. Two inverted glass bays on either side of the entrance once served as the access for the turn-of-the-century fire engines (one was horse-drawn, the other motorized); now, the bays fill the gallery with natural light. The space, with its gleaming wooden plank floors and 16-foot ceilings, blends the charm of old San Francisco with the sophistication of the art world. Interior walls are either exposed brick or sheet-rocked and painted a crisp white, and feature artwork created on the premises. The workshop at the rear of the building can be set up for a buffet, food preparation, music or as an extension of the gallery space.
With its relaxed, yet stylish, setting, Aurobora Press lends itself to any type of reception, from an elegant sit-down dinner to a casual cocktail party. While Aurobora may be noted for producing one-of-a-kind prints, it’s equally adept at hosting unique event.
