Argonaut Hotel

Description

The newest property along Fisherman’s Wharf—the chic and upscale Argonaut Hotel—handily dispels the myth that the wharf is a destination for tourists only. Although it shares its waterfront setting with restaurants and shops, the Argonaut remains in a class by itself.

Just steps from the Maritime National Historical Park, the hotel overlooks the green stretch of the park, along with the waters of the Bay and the numerous historic vessels docked there. Wedding photos taken here will feature Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance.

The Argonaut occupies a historic brick building that was once a Del Monte fruit cannery, and, thanks to the renowned Kimpton Design Group, the impressive structure has been reborn as a boutique-style hotel of the highest order. One of the most pleasing aspects of this transformation is the décor: the designers have taken their inspiration from the water and boats right outside, seamlessly linking the interior to the Bay and its history. Shades of deep blue and white, lights shaped like portals, ship’s wheels, and tasteful nods to marine life show up throughout the hotel.

When it comes to weddings or other special events, the Argonaut offers four private areas for parties. Perhaps the most unusual is the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park Museum Visitors Center, which is located on the first floor of the hotel. The public gets to enjoy the Center during the day, but in the evening it can be exclusively yours. An airy art gallery at one end of the Center makes an interesting space for a seated dinner or cocktail reception. You and your guests will enjoy the boat-themed fine art on the walls, and throughout the event you’re free to walk through the Visitors Center and admire wondrous antique nautical objects and memorabilia, as well as placards explaining the history of the wharf.

For a more traditional setting, book the hotel’s Golden Gate Ballroom. Here, chandeliers shaped like giant ship’s compasses hang above a whimsical naval-inspired carpet of rolling waves and stars. Tawny yellow walls contribute to the warm feel of the room, and its open, unstructured layout accommodates all manner of festivities. An open-air courtyard located next to the Argonaut is available for semi-private cocktail receptions as well as outdoor lunch and dinner events.

The Blue Mermaid Chowder House and Bar presents a more casual atmosphere and is available for private parties. This restaurant features more sailing relics, a full bar, an open kitchen, and access to courtyard patio seating. Bridal brunches along with morning-after-the-wedding banquets work well within its laid-back confines. The Blue Mermaid also features a lovely outdoor patio that can be tented in the event of inclement weather.

From its vantage point at the far west edge of Fisherman’s Wharf, the Argonaut stands sentinel over a sweeping, nearly panoramic Bay view. If you love all things nautical, or you’re simply looking for a luxurious hotel in one of San Francisco’s most cosmpolitan areas, the Argonaut may be just the place to celebrate.
