Description
It would be hard to argue with USA Today, which described the Archbishop’s Mansion as "the most elegant in-city, small hotel on the West Coast, if not in the U.S." Built in 1904 as the home for the archbishop of San Francisco, this landmark building is now an upscale B&B, located in a friendly residential neighborhood across from Alamo Square Park with the city’s most plentiful collection of Victorian architecture, including the famous "Painted Ladies".
The Mansion’s pale blue façade is an impressive version of a French Chateau. The distinguished interior is equally striking: hand-painted ceilings, detailed woodwork, Oriental carpets, antique appointments and fine period furnishings all convey an understated elegance. The first-floor Dining Room, decked with rich polished cherrywood paneling and a coffered ceiling, lends the appropriate gravitas to rehearsal dinners, receptions or other celebratory gatherings. Brass wall sconces, a nostalgic chandelier and a bricked fireplace topped with a burnished wood mantel contribute to the room’s dignified, yet warm, character. A curved window alcove flanked by gleaming mahogany columns makes an inspired showcase for a wedding cake. The Don Giovanni Salon, graced with an even larger fireplace, is similar in décor but has leather sofas and club chairs for a more relaxed atmosphere. If you like a little drama, the formal stairway allows the bride to make a grand entrance, and the stairway landing acts as a regal spot for a ceremony.
Remember, the Archbishop’s Mansion is also a très chic bed and breakfast inn, so after your party a few of your guests are just steps away from their accomodations. The fifteen luxurious guestrooms and suites are each named for an opera, and are individually decorated in period antiques that reflect their opera’s theme. Canopied king and queen beds are dressed with crocheted lace coverlets, fluffy duvets and hand-sewn decorative pillow shams; and the bathrooms are fitted with antique wood or marble vanities, and stocked with luxury spa products and Kimono-style bathrobes. Some rooms have Jacuzzis and others fireplaces, but the newleyweds may want to indulge in the ultimate opulence: The Don Giovanni Presidential Suite. The sleeping chamber boasts a sitting area, a fireplace and a spectacular four-poster bed, hand-carved in Italy in 1639! A separate park-view salon has the largest fireplace in the Mansion, and is spacious enough for pre-wedding prep and lively after-parties. A deluxe continental breakfast is delivered to your room each morning, which we recommend you enjoy in bed. While guests take advantage of the fact that the Mansion is just minutes from the City by the Bay’s most popular attractions, you may decide to spend the your entire honeymoon right here.
