Description
The story behind Adagia really begins with the leaders of the Presbyterian Church who purchased the land and laid the plans for the little town of Berkeley back in 1865. They petitioned the State for the charter of the College of California, which later became UC Berkeley, and their presence is still strong at Westminster House, the beautiful landmark property near the top of Bancroft Way on the southeastern corner of the campus. Designed by Bay Area architect, Walter H. Ratcliff, and modeled after the manor homes and medieval half-timbered buildings of his native England, the handsome Tudor-style edifice was built in 1926. In 2003 it was lovingly restored and remodeled to accommodate Adagia Restaurant. Selected as Best New Restaurant of the Year (2005) by the Contra Costa Times, Adagia is extraordinary by any standard. As a venue for special events it’s a standout.
A front garden worthy of a country estate greets you as you amble up the path to the large oaken front door. Note that the door opens inward as doors do in homes rather than outward as they do in businesses. The cordial effect extends well beyond the front door to a generous foyer, with a long bar on the right, large enough for guests to gather and chat without crowding. But Adagia’s most striking feature is the Great Hall. A dining room fit for a monarch, it has, in fact, hosted many a visiting dignitary over the decades. These days, as the restaurant’s main dining room and premier event space, it evokes an almost storybook grandeur. A well-known local food critic likened it to a set for a Harry Potter movie. Its lustrous hardwood floors, coffered ceiling, richly paneled walls, massive fireplace, chandeliers and diamond-patterned leaded-glass windows certainly suggest an exclusive prep school, as does the thick wooden 14-foot table that serves as the heart of the hall. Yet, there’s nothing stuffy about the super-friendly staff or the food, which is eclectically California, seasonally driven, imaginative, organic, and composed of fresh, locally grown ingredients.
Three large double doors open from the dining room onto a spacious inner courtyard, which is just right for dancing and can be set with tables for additional dining, chairs for a ceremony, or equipment for a DJ or band. Moon-like globes help light up the night and the sparkle from the Great Hall sends out a celebratory vibe. For a gala event book both spaces and let the party flow effortlessly in and out of doors. On the opposite side of the Great Hall, the private dining room, once the Westminster House chapel, can be reserved for small, ultra-private gatherings. Its fireplace, stained-glass windows and walls painted in buttery Tuscan tones lend it a dreamy ambiance, and a private entrance for service assures seclusion. Like the rest of the restaurant, this room is designed with great parties in mind.
Couples often like to split their celebration between the Adagia and her sister property the Bancroft Hotel, just a half-block away. And whether they host their ceremony at the hotel and their reception at the restaurant, or the reverse, there’s a beautiful synergy between the two facilities. The best part? Your guests are already "home" when the festivities have ended: the Bancroft Hotel, with its Arts and Crafts period detailing and Julia Morgan-inspired furnishings, is a lovely place to stay.
