Description
Nestled in the Santa Monica foothills, the family-friendly towns of Calabasas and Agoura Hills are among the most desirable places to live in Southern California. Some long-time residents were lured here by the wide-open spaces that welcomed their horses, while many newcomers fled the confines of the city for exclusive, creekside neighborhoods. It’s quiet here, but not too quiet, with plenty of upscale shopping and trendy dining to content erstwhile urbanites. Now this pleasant enclave has one more enviable feature: a Community Center that’s part health club, part “activities central,” and part special event facility. Lucky for you, you don’t have to be a resident to enjoy what the Center has to offer.
During normal business hours, both the young and the young-at-heart indulge in a potpourri of fun at the Center, including Swing Salsa lessons, youth camps, belly dancing classes, rock-climbing lessons, and annual events like the St. Patrick’s Day Community Barbecue. However, on most weekends you can hold a private celebration here.
Set back against the hills and surrounded by attractive landscaping, the Center is housed in a contemporary building boasting a huge, avant-garde arch over the entryway. The lobby is bright and airy, thanks to the double-tall windows and a vaulted atrium that let in the sunshine, nourishing the potted plantation ferns. Everything here is “quality”—even the vending machine serves fresh-ground Starbuck’s cappuccinos! Party planners and brides find this space so welcoming they often use it for their cocktail hour.
On the outdoor patio, which runs the length of the Community Room, banks of African violets, French lavender and native grasses border one side, and several faux brick planters hold graceful saplings. Guests can enjoy their champagne and hors d’oeuvres while lounging on teak garden furniture, and when it’s time for the reception they simply walk through a set of doors that open right into the Community Room.
The Community Room holds up to 300, but can be divided into three sections for smaller groups. The high, barrel-vaulted ceiling—made of open beams and wooden planking—coordinates with the floor, polished to a gleam. A row of accent tiles marks the floor’s perimeter, but other than that, neutral earth tones keep the look light and accessible. If you’re planning a gala-sized affair, the 10,000-square-foot Gymnasium accommodates 800 guests with ease.
With two generous spaces you can decorate nearly any way you like, you’re free to design a thoroughly original event. One bride enlisted a local nursery to transform the Community Room into an enchanted forest with potted trees, garlands of greenery, and hanging floral baskets. Another inspired client hung draping from the ceiling to separate five themed areas inside the Gymnasium.
The folks at the Center encourage your creativity, and there are no limitations on catering, so they say YES! to specialty cuisine. You’ll appreciate their friendly, helpful attitude, and the way they make you feel like part of the community, even if you visit from afar.
