Scheid Vineyards Wedding Website
Why We Like This Place
For many brides, the venue hunt goes something like this: Your heart is set on a winery or vineyard wedding, but a tour of Napa, Sonoma, and Paso Robles Wine Country leaves you with sticker shock. The affordable options? Some are so remote that guests might need a GPS and 4-wheel drive to get there. Still others are a bit pretentious, and you wouldn’t be surprised if a concierge with a French accent attempted to screen your guests from behind a red velvet rope. Disappointed, you’re ready to give up on your winery wedding dream. Don’t. Instead, head to the Salinas Valley and visit Scheid Vineyards Estate Winery, a congenial, versatile and scenic event site that’s also easy on the wallet.
The Salinas Valley, you ask? Yes, that fertile, unspoiled arroyo an hour south of Monterey that inspired the famous novels of Steinbeck and Kerouac. The picturesque terrain between the rugged Santa Lucia Mountains to the west and the chaparral-cloaked Gabilan range to the east boasts a temperate climate that’s ideal for growing grapes. The pace slows down in this viticulture Eden, and you get a sense that a celebration here would capture the rustic simplicity you’ve been searching for.
You’re right. Scheid is situated in Greenfield’s rural environs, just two easy minutes from a highway exit. Surrounded by fields and mountains, the Tasting Room is in a renovated 100-year-old barn painted cornflower blue. Wedding ceremonies are held in a spacious backyard garden. One section sports raised beds brimming with herbs and ripening vegetables; the demonstration vineyard flourishes at the center; and on the north side, a ribbon of rose bushes lines the first fragrant stretch of the wedding aisle. Guests look on from a pair of lawns edged with grapevines, while the couple shares their vows atop a raised stage. Afterwards, the newlyweds pose for photos in the vineyard, or beneath a long arbor canopied with fruit-laden grapevines on an adjacent deck.
Guests, meanwhile, enjoy the social hour strolling through the kitchen garden, playing bocce ball, or relaxing at cocktail tables on the nearby Vineyard Patio. When it’s time to dine, it’s just steps to the Vineyard Pavilion, a red brick courtyard accented with wine barrels and market lights. Dancing is divine beneath the glittering evening stars, which are especially abundant out here in the country.
For something different, why not set up pre-dinner mingling in the Barrel Reserve? Guests get a behind-the-scenes peek at wine production, and the piquant aroma of fermenting grapes lends an air of romance to the festivities. Rehearsal dinners or receptions in front of gigantic stainless steel wine vats or stacks of oak wine barrels are exciting and memorable. Your experienced site coordinator will help out with lots of clever ideas, as well as assist with wine and meal pairings—Scheid’s handcrafted, multiple-award-winning vintages are sure to please. Another bonus: Rental includes the Vineyard Guest House, a roomy and smartly outfitted retreat where the bride and her attendants prepare in privacy, style and comfort.
So there you have it—a charming venue that’s far from city stress yet easy to find, all at a friendly price point. Eureka!
