Why We Like This Place
Once given over to almond orchards, Templeton’s pretty countryside has mostly gone the way of the grape. Yet here and there, clusters of pink blossoms from those once pervasive trees still embellish the brow of a hill like cotton candy at a summer carnival. If such imagery strikes a wistful chord in you, then a visit to Hummingbird House & Vineyard is sure to conjure up similar feel-good sentiments.
A pair of gates swings open in a friendly welcome to this five-acre private estate. Well-tended grapevines flow in neat rows from the entrance. Guests leave their vehicles in a pasture to their right, and then stroll to a cool, grassy yard. Nearby, the house provides a charming backdrop for any event, although the focus is on the outdoor acreage.
The centerpiece of the property is a glorious pond, languid and poetic in its beauty. A waterfall cascading down a rocky slope supplies a dash of drama, and a swan couple gliding side by side adds a romantic grace note. Completing the tableau is the sylvan landscape: flowering mimosa and soaring redwoods; stately sycamores, whose leaves reflect the changing of the seasons; and weeping willows, their long branches caressing the pebbly shoreline.
Wedding ceremonies are usually held on a petite dock that juts out into the pond, and with the waterfall in the background the setting is utterly enchanting. During the cocktail hour, guests can explore the vineyard, admire the swans, or kick back and enjoy the sunset reflected on the pond’s rippling surface. Receptions take place on the lawn, and whatever you’ve chosen for your color palette—autumnal reds and golds, a vibrant tropical motif, or crisp white linens kissed with centerpieces of hot pink Gerbera daisies—the estate’s foliage makes a verdant canvas. After dinner, dancing breaks out on an elegant travertine tile floor that has been built right into the shore, complete with stone banquettes where revelers can take their ease.
The grounds at Hummingbird House are so varied, they lend themselves to many different themes for photos and events: Pictures taken by the palm trees and waterfall allude to island life, while shots posed under the redwoods convey a wintry, mountain coziness. For a feeling of the South, stage a ceremony beneath the willows with the downy swans swimming past; or for a taste of a New England fall, arrange the bridal party among the sycamores’ burnished leaves. In spring, blooming cherry trees impart an Asian flair; or experience an authentic wine-country ambiance any time of year among the grapevines. It’s hard to believe that there are so many possibilities, all in one place!
Also on the property, the Mona Lisa Barn is a lovely indoor venue for rehearsal dinners, reunions and of course, barn weddings! A true work of art, it features ceiling fans, wood-trimmed windows and beams, a wood floor, and tumbled travertine entries. A two-story guest cottage adjacent to the main house provides homey comforts for an overnight stay. The downstairs suite includes a patio with a trickling fountain, and the loft-like upper suite comes with a view-filled deck. As you drift off to sleep on your wedding night, the stillness of a country evening is broken only by the soft sounds of nature, a final confirmation that Hummingbird House and Vineyard is a truly magical place.
